Blue Jays Discussion: 2024-25 Off-season: The free agent watch begins (and sometimes old baseball radio broadcasts)

Five events led to increased birth metrics 9(±1) months later and these included the Super Bowl, the 2009 UEFA Champions League, the 2010 FIFA World Cup, the 2016 UEFA Euros and the 2019 Rugby World Cup. Several la Liga soccer matches also had effects. With a few exceptions, major American football, Association football (soccer) and Rugby apex tournaments in Africa, North America, Asia and Europe were associated with increases in the number of babies born and/or in the birth sex ratio 9(±1) months following notable team wins and/or hosting the tournament. Furthermore, unexpected losses by teams from a premier soccer league were associated with a decline in births 9 months on.
Still seems absolutely pathetic to me.

The whole "Wah! Wah! I don't want to be disappointed" isn't a good look either.

This is where all that letting agents use us for leverage comes into play in reverse. We get them to report that we are a finalist so when he goes to the Dodgers we can say "see, we are really close to always getting what we want" (but never do)

So Sasaki is between Dodgers, Padres and Jays. That is the order of likehood as well. Let me see would he like to play with the defending champions who have one of the best Japanese pitchers in mlb history and one of it not the best Japanese position players of all time who also happens to be another one of the best Japanese pitchers of all time. Or he could come to a team trending down to being a rebuilding team with zero direction but has a nice spring facility. Wonder where he'll choose lol. There is zero chance he's coming here.

f*** theyre going to get our hopes up again arent they
we are not in contention!

Yeah, for once it's nice to have a dude consider us not simply to gain leverage on his actual desired market...but he'd have to be nuts to choose the Jays over the Dodgers right now.

Signing with the Dodgers is the most boring path possible. I get that I'm not a professional athlete, but I just don't get it.

If these guys are so hyper-competitive, wouldn't they want to make the choice with at least SOME challenge involved? Doesn't signing with the reigning champs who spend all the money and get basically any player they want seem like the path of least resistance?

I would imagine picking a team that genuinely needs you and then carrying them to the promised land would be a much bigger, more satisfying accomplishment than joining the front-runners and being the sixth best player.

I doubt sasaki even considers the dodgers I have to find the article but he hates the Japanese media and dealt with mental health issues because of them I doubt he would wanna go to a market as big as the dodgers.
So it should be really a 2 team race between the padres and the jays, jays have issues but so does san diago money issues and they might even relocate

I remember that too….kinda likes things abit more low key, and wants to be the guy….
Plus, I resist the negative vibe around here as long as I can.

If we signed him, wonder if we would then flip Bassit for some salary relief then go for Bregman and/or Santander/Alonso.
Has to be the next step.
There was a tweet the other day about teams nosing around him.

I'm torn on trading Bassitt if they add another starter. There's so much value in having a decent veteran who can eat innings. I guess if you think you can get similar value for half the cost or something then you can spend $10 million on another solid piece... maybe? But it's not like they would really save $20 million because they would need another starter.

I hear you, and his fips were better than his numbers last year so he’s likely to be fine as an inning eater.
But Sasaki is built up, so durability shouldn’t be a huge issue. And there’s still YRod in house, who can just as easily be the fifth starter and should be on track to pitch more innings with Manoah coming back around the second half. Not to mention already three RH relievers added to the pen.
I don’t know what his value would be, but I’m pretty sure it’s something since it’s just a one year commit, and riskier less accomplished guys are making what, and the starters market is thinning out.
I’m sure temptation to add bigger bats with that money will be strong.

I think Bassit was a goner if they got Burnes - you'd need to free up some salary from the rotation to spend on offense/bp in that scenario. But with Sasaki being inexpensive, it makes less sense to move Bassitt.
