2024-25 General Dallas Stars Talk

Adding Jones to the top 4 solidifies this team as a serious contender for me. We are missing one piece in the top 4.. and we will never win a Cup with Heiskanen pushing 30 mins a night and Harley pushing 28 mins a night every playoff game you need fresh players and smart minutes to win the entire thing. What the coaching staff did last year was an embarrassment.

No, this is the target.

Dobson is a guy you throw real trade assets at and then offer him a low ball 8 year deal, which he'll take because hockey players are idiots.

Dobson is obviously better, but NYI wants to improve their offence now whereas CHI would want future assets. Maybe you could try and convince them to want a younger forward like Stankoven as the piece. Dobson would be ideal, Jones seems more realistic for what Dallas has to trade right now

I'd prefer Karlsson to either, still

Best player and offers the most flexibility contract wise

Any of those three would be amazing adds, but I have a difficult time seeing Nill pull the trigger even though I think it'd possibly be the single most important move of his tenure here

Of those 3 names above. I feel Jones is the most attainable while not requiring to give up Bourque or Stankoven.

If that's the case, would prefer him over Dobson.

Jones would be very impactful paired with Heiskanen

I mean for Dobson, I have zero issue giving up Bourque or Stank.
Plus we'd be trading one of them out of the conference at least. Also Dobson is only 25, so assuming we sign him long term (which could get crazy if he wants $10m+/yr) we'd be set for a long time. He can also run the PP if we need him to. But damn, we've been looking for a #1RD since Klingberg fell apart. The real issue is which one do we trade, Bourque or Stankoven? That's a really tough call right now and I think we'll all be upset either way

I'd trade both for Dobson and a plus of some sort - nothing too extreme for the plus, but I don't think the Islanders would trade him for just one of them. Maybe Nill could swing one of the two and Stranges for Dobson, but I doubt it.

As much fun as it is to get hyped about the prospects, I don't see either one as a top six playoff warrior, so if the chance to get a long term top 4 RD is there, Nill has to take it.

You can watch best on best hockey instead of watching Robertson struggle to skate and float around doing nothing.
I assume you're talking the 4 nations tournament? that isn't best on best
It's just redistributed nhl teams by geographic border. It's slightly higher caliber olympic hockey, and better than an allstar game but boring overall, turned it off after 10 minutes.

Yeah McDavid, MacKinnon, Crosby and company are so boring.
There's 0 at stake and it showed, which is good because there's less risk of injury to the Stars playing in it, though I'm sure hintz will find a way.

I can watch all three 82x a year if I want, why would this 2 week period be any more significant?

How did it show? There was already an injury, players were checking and playing at a high level, its more significant because you are putting the best players in the world on the same team and watching the game.

Its far superior hockey to an NHL game because you aren't watching Oscar Back and Matt Dumba.. you are watching a full fledged lineup of superstars top to bottom.

I'm not sure what's confusing about it or unentertaining or bad for the game.

Maybe it got better before/after the 10 mins I watched, felt like a slightly higher caliber Olympic game, nothing more, I'll check out tomorrow's game see how that looks.

Sure it's better to not watch Matt Dumba but it's not like Nyquist, Arvidsson, Lindholm, Haula, Loustorine, Armia, Maatta, Mikolla, Valimaki are world beaters. Hell the 2nd and 4th best player in the NHL, aren't even a part of the tournament, let's not get carried away with "top to bottom" superstars, go look at Sweden/Finland rosters, even the US has Trochek, Faber, Kreider, and Nelson. The only team that is mostly true of is Canada.
Which explains why it's always Canadians talking about international hockey as "best on best", it's the one time a team in Canada can actually win something because their 4th line/3rd pairing would, in most cases, be every other nations 1st

The game was a lot of fun. I don't get the complaint.
Wasn't a complaint, other than the "2 weeks without real hockey in the middle of the season is dumb." Which it is.
Suggesting the gimmick money grab as a "best on best" led to the other post about finding it boring.
International Hockey, outside of junior level, has never been interesting to me. Don't give a f*** about the "teams" and it's the same players we watch all the time just shuffled around.

They could do this tournament during the preseason though, they don't need to interrupt the season and risk injury a few months from the PO, when the actual important hockey is played.

Yeah, I dont get the cynicism as this is how you grow the game. If the NHL consistently continues to host these tournaments they are going to grow in prestige and hype. And nothing inspires future nhlers and fans more than watching their country compete.

For example: even the most casual Swedish hockey fans become passionate fans when Tre Kronor played in the old best-on-best olympic games. I'm sure that hold true for North Americans aswell (especially Canadians).

And the players obviously care as playing for their national team is what they grew up dreaming of.

Some interesting tidbits here.

Wish you could get this whole website to watch that segment on how trades work. People think GM's panic and freakout then make a trade for a player that same day/week.

This is why I think Dallas is in on EK65. There's a history of this management group wanting him.

I assume it's the same with Seth Jones. Dallas probably talked to him when he was a free agent, just like they did Matt Duchene, but ultimately decided the price was too high for them to sign him at the time. A team retaining salary or buying one of these players out changes the prices and the cap going up changes Dallas' money situation.

Janko also hit the nail on the head with something i've been thinking about which was STL/EDM offer sheet situation. How afraid is this management group of that happening to Wyatt/Harley/Bourque/Stank?

Difficult spot for them to be in right now. Who knows what injury could pop up next?

Shea Theodore just got hurt in game 1 of CAN v SWE
