Speculation: 2024-25 - Free Agency/Trade Thread

I'll give Verbeek credit for playing the long game with Gibson. While most of us (myself included) were willing to waive him over the summer, Verbeek has stood fast on getting a "very high" return for him. And he just may get that but keeping him is cool as well.

Which part? The Gibson hate/frustration was very high over the summer...replace the word "most" with "many" if you prefer. If you weren't included in the "many" then that's ok.
That people would've been cool with just throwing Gibson on waivers last summer. What would the point be of giving him away for free?

There were people who wanted to waive him? I think the crowd of Ducks fans who wanted to trade him or dump him for very little had grown, but I don't think there were a lot of people just looking to waive him.

Because his attitude was terrible and only exceeded by his on ice performance?

I think I read somewhere on HF that he is looking for $10 million AAV this summer.

I know his defense can be suspect at times, but I would be happy to pay a 25-year-old, near PPG RHD $10 million per year. Heck, Gibson, Helleson, and Zellweger for Bouchard and Skinner. Long-term you go LaCombe-Bouchard, Mintyukov-Trouba, Stolberg - Luneau. Sign a LHD for a couple years until Stolberg is ready.

I know, none of this is real. But it's fun to think about.

Crazy dream scenario not based in reality. Carolina unable to re-sign Rantanen puts him up for sale, we offer Gibby, Fabbri@50% and Lundestrom and a D prospect for Rantenan and Kotkaniemi and either of their goalies they dont want. No way it ever happens but a guy and wish can't he?

What if he won't sign with the Ducks?

We still have Dostal and upgraded Lundestrom to Kotkaniemi. You lose out on returns for Gibby and Fabbri for the chance of offering an 8th year for a player who will have a lot of suitors as a UFA. Doesn't seem like a crazy cost given most people didnt/don't think Gibby has any value. Of course that assumes Carolina thinks Gibby has value. What's Fabbri worth, even at 50%?

well, that creative if nothing else. of course, the Ducks would have to take back Andersen in your mythical scenario. I can't see any way the Ducks do that deal without a guaranteed signed Rantanen. You might as well take your chances of signing him in free agency and keep the assets.

You're probably right but I'm more willing than most to give up futures to trade for pending UFAs I want to sign rather than waiting. Probably because we usually lose out in UFA.

Trading Gibson will be a clear step back in goal. The goalie in return in any trade will obviously be worse than Gibson and his replacement next season, whether it's this goalie or another, will almost certainly be worse than Gibson.

It stands to reason that unless Dostal compensates by playing more games, then the Ducks will allow more goals after a Gibson trade. Considering their current reliance on stellar goaltending and inability to consistently score goals, it seems like trading Gibson would be a mistake for the team. However, if he wants out, that should be respected.

Consequently, I understand why Verbeek will not lower his value on him. Trading Gibson hurts the Ducks now and next year. It should cost a lot if the Ducks are having to take a step back in goal.

He won’t sign with the Ducks because the Ducks won’t pay him $14m. Which is a good thing.

I’m inclined to think Mikko may have made a big mistake in forcing Colorado’s hand, but not as big as Carolina’s.

John
Why is it a good thing? He would be the best player the Ducks have had in over a decade and he is only 28.

Getzlaf in 2016-2017 and 2017-2018 was comfortably better than Rantanen is now.

The scoring rates were wayyyy lower and Getzlaf was above a PPG(not many guys were - maybe 8-10 other players max without looking). A literal dead puck era. Also a much better all around player.

Although I agree that Rantanen would be by far our best player since 2018
