Speculation: 2024-25 - Free Agency/Trade Thread

RD Dobson is an offensive specialist and sheltered/deployed like one. Look at his OZ Start% for his career. It's been mostly around 60% or higher in five out of his six years in the league.

No way we trade Terry for an OFD, which we have plenty of in our org. We aren't gunning for a championship this year nor next. All of our youth forwards are still trying to find footing in the NHL. RD Luneau found his offensive gear recently in the AHL.

Anaheim has an abundance of OFD's in LD Minty, LD/RD Zell, RD Luneau, and LD Dionicio. Then there are the 2WD's in LaCombe and, potentially, Tarin Smith. Finally, our DFD's (or stay-at-home guys) in RD Helleson, LD Hinds, RD Warren, RD Moore (NCAA), and LD Solberg.

He is a good all around D. And he is younger than Terry. And he plays a position that is much harder to fill than a winger.

I don’t think a 1-1 Terry for Dobson deal is enough for the islanders but that is the cost of acquiring top talent. Terry’s replacement is already in the system. Guys like Dobson are almost never available.

The "replacement in the system" argument is a risky one. Sure, Sennecke looks good and maybe he's amazing for the team. Or, he gets injured and never lives up to potential. Or, he demands a trade two years from now. The problem with this viewpoint is that you hope the player stays and becomes good. Terry is already good. There's way less risk.

The Ducks defensive options are plenty between Trouba, Gudas, Mintyukov, LaCombe, Zellweger, Helleson, and Solberg and then the other guys already drafted. If they want an upgrade, wouldn't this be the area to trade from? Otherwise, it becomes overcrowded.

At the same time, there is a clear need for more top 6 forwards. Trading from this already thin area seems like a step backwards. Additionally, top 4 defenseman are traded all the time. The Ducks got Trouba for very little. However, scoring forwards, they go for high prices and are not often traded. If it was easy, why has Verbeek been unable to do this for over a year?

Guys like Dobson are available regularly. Guys like Terry are not because teams fight to keep them.

I have no interest in dealing Gibson at this point. We have such a good tandem, no need to break that up unless Gibson truly wants out.

Look at Fowlers new team, we could leapfrog them tonight. I wonder if Gibson is particular on where he would go. Edmonton and Carolina would be the only teams that MAYBE could upgrade in net, though Carolina seems like a longshot.

One team that I could see having interest in Gibson is Vegas, but maybe not until the offseason. Hill and Samsonov have just been OK and they are UFAs at the end of the season.

The problem with both Edmonton and Vegas (besides being in the same division) is that they are both almost bereft any decent assets to send back. Carolina OTOH has the assets but doesn't like to trade them. Kinda all points to Gibson isn't going anywhere.

Tarasenko is a guy I wouldn't mind kicking the tires on. He probably wouldn't want to come here but I think he is being pushed down the line-up in Detroit and, if he is washed, he'd only be on the books for one season after this.

Friedman mentioned someone told him Edmonton has interest in Gibson, but Friedman went on to say that he thinks Gibson wants to be “the guy” somewhere, so he might not be a fan of being a part of another tandem with Skinner.

At this point, I actually wouldn’t be crazy about seeing Gibby get traded. He’s been playing so well and he seems to be enjoying himself a bit more.

Goalie trades are always underwhelming in terms of return. Nobody should be getting too excited about what we’d get for him.
Completely agree - we could be on the verge of breaking through next year but for that to happen we need 2 goalies that can steal games

I’m fine with Gibson either way. It just doesn’t matter that much. He’s not blocking anyone and is still pretty good if the coaching staff manages his work load

The only reason I wanted to see him traded before was because it appeared the coaching staff was going to play him the vast majority of starts over Dostal, which would have been a huge mistake

I agree with this but I would also add that I would trade him if he legitimately wants to leave. I know not everyone will agree with that, but it would be doing him a solid (and I’m not saying I would just give him away either).

I’m cool keeping gibson , I’m cool trading him.

I think there is a good chance Gibson wants to leave and have some chances on a contender…. That’s fine, he stayed here for shitty years he deserves to play meaningful games for actual contenders.

Hope we can find a stop gap goalie in the trade.
