Speculation: 2024-25 - Free Agency/Trade Thread

Dumo needs to go. I really like the player, but Helleson and Zelly both need to be every night players this year. I think he’ll get a 3rd+5th. I’d do it sooner than later to get the young guys playing every night. Fabbri is an interesting case. I think he’s a great fit for the team but I don’t think he should be re-signed. If we’re more than 6 points out at the deadline, trade him, otherwise keep him for the stretch run.

I like Fabbri's work ethic and drive but he's a mess. His position is the one I hope is upgraded the most.

Takes two to tango and I'm not sure a guy like Dumo is going to be in high demand right now. Six weeks from now? Perhaps, depending on which team needs a LHD and can't find a better option elsewhere. Patience...

The top 6 RHW Verbeek wanted no ?

Quinn and Boeser are the only ones maybe available that make some sense.

I don't disagree. Quinn seems like a smart move with low risk/high rewards potential if they were willing to move him. The Ducks would still need to add a winger like Boeser, but I think Quinn in addition would be a solid acquisition.

IMO, Boeser is pretty much exactly what the Ducks need in a player. Solid defensively, scores consistently at 5v5 and on the PP, well liked in the dressing room, and is a clear top 6 goals scoring winger. His injury history is a bit concerning as is his future contract. He'll be 28 when signing a contract and 7 years puts him at 35. He'll probably want around 8 mil. 7x8 is no small contract, and they probably would have to trade for him at the deadline. Even with all of that, I would do it. Worth the risk to take a step forward. They need goals.

I wonder what the ask for Boeser would be. I'd give up our 1st (top 3 protected) and a prospect (not Senneke or Solberg) if he was willing to extend with us.

I wonder if Carolina held onto Kotkaniemi in the Rantanen deal in hopes to pawn him to us for Gibson. I think a swap might make sense. If we end up trading Fabbri and Lundy next month Kotkaniemi and someone like Galimov or Colangelo can take their spots. Kotkaniemi might just need a change in scenery like Kaako and he would give us nice size down the middle also be the top faceoff man. Could the holdup be how much the Beeker wants to retain.

Cap space would be equivalent: Gibson (6.4 M) for Kotkaniemi + Kochetkov (6.82 M combined). But the Hurricanes are smart and aren't trading top prospects or picks to ensure their window for competing continues for a long time (i.,e. they have Nikishin and Morrow ready to replace Burns and Orlov). Maybe we are holding out on a decent prospect like Badinka for near max retention? Gibby at 3.2 million would give them plenty of money to resign stars like Rantanen.

I know there is no rush and the preference is likely to trade Gibby next year, but it would be cool to see him in the playoffs again.

He is my 3rd priority if we don't get one of the 2 stars, but no chance I'm giving up a top 5 pick for him. Especially when we can get him for free in a couple months if he wants to come here.

Also I expect Vancouver would be looking for players to help them win now.

They will buy him out before they have to dump him. His buyout is like nothing.

But why buy him out when you can swap him for a positional need. Andersen has been injury prone and Kochetkov has been up and down. They are very good in all other areas. Tulsky is a stats guy and I've read that he wasn't satisfied with their current goaltending situation.

For us, I think it would be better than picks or prospects and would let us continue to compete instead of tanking in the final games like we have been doing for many years now. We don't have a goalie ready at least for next year so Kochetkov is a decent upside young goalie that is on a cheap contract. Kotkaniemi is only 24 years old and entering his prime years to possibly break out to live up to his contract. If we can get a sweetener to take on that risk and some retention it might be worth it. A win win for both teams, and maybe a bigger win for Gibby.

Because no GM is dumb enough to take that contract on unless there is an equally bad contract going the other way. And if there is an equally bad contract going the other way they are better off buying him out.

This is not a Kakko situation. Kotkaniemi sucks and has always sucked. He never should have been a 3rd overall pick, he wasn't developed because he never should have been in the NHL in his D+1, he was only offer sheeted as a retaliation for Aho. The Hurricanes would be skipping to the bank if they could dump him for free.

I would much rather take picks and prospects and use those in a package for a guy that will actually help the team then a 5 mil 3rd liner who hasn't topped 43 points, despite playing on the 6th best offense in the league for the last 4 years, and having a 95 point pace linemate in Necas all season.
