Rumor: 2024-2025 Trade Rumors and Free Agency Talk | The Slow Crawl to the Season

How much would Ottawa have to pay him for him to re-sign there? Even then it’s doubtful. Ottawa goes from Stützle to Mittelstadt even if they’re Rantanen is a more productive player than Tkachuk
I know it's not realistic. The age of Mikko doesn't even fit with their core. I'm just trying to shit post away the pain of the Bronco's loss.

I could see Svech or Necas if Mikko comes signed. Mikko would be adding exactly what that team is missing in an elite game breaking talent.

In the case of Svech we'd add some cap space, but would they be able to make up for the major loss of talent on the wing in depth? Easier said than done.

It wouldn't be simply about this season. Right or wrong..

You'd think any talented winger would get the Mack boost, and probably be better defensively than Mikko. I don't know shit about Necas though tbh.

Avs aren’t trading Mikko. He’ll be re-signed

Yeah one of the biggest reasons I don't see it happening is they'd be risking pissing off MacKinnon mid season, which could impact their playoff chances.

Nate can be a moody guy and when he goes into a mental funk he doesn't play well.

If the goal is the Cup no matter what, I have a hard time seeing them take that risk with Nate. He likes playing with Mikko. Letting him walk as a UFA, he could rationalize as a business decisions, but a trade mid season would be different. That has a chance to make them worse after they've already put in work.

Only way I see it happening is if they trade for Crosby in a separate deal to appease him, but I don't think Crosby wants to leave Pittsburgh. That doesn't sound right so let me amend it. I don't think he wants to leave the Pittsburgh Penguins.

You said an impending UFA needs to be traded before the deadline and that we can’t trade him after the season.

The sky is also blue.

Farts smell.
Not mine. Fresh, airy, with a clean crisp essence.

I have a hard time believing this report. It's just not the way they operate.

That said, the team is currently really not looking all that dominating with him in the lineup. Is it possible - albeit unlikely - that they see that there's little to lose if they follow this path? They're not currently a dominating team with him, and if they lose him for nothing, there's a pretty solid chance they could be going to roll back to a playoff bubble team. And they'd still lack depth and a prospect pool.

I know reporters have a job to do, but to put silly things out there just for clicks makes them look stupid. If Avs can’t re-sign Mikko they’ll trade him. Yeah ok sure. All that franchise altering decision is gonna come in the next couple of months before the March deadline, and Avs will know by that time whether they can re-sign Mikko or they will trade the 3rd leading scorer in the NHL.

That’s some top notch reporting

Feels really unlikely, but also Renaud is one of the best reporters out there. Historically he migth be the best sourced guy with the Avs. He's nailed a lot of out of left field rumors.

If this doesn't happen, and Gabe comes back relatively soon, part of me will wonder if the Avs decided to start using the media to their advantage, with selective leaks to Renaud, Severali, and perhaps others?

Oh I know it's not only about this year. My whole point is making the team better sans Mikko is easier said than done. Svech probably gets a boost playing with Mack, but even there's still a gigantic talent discrepancy there. And even then you still need to actually hit on the improvements down the lineup. Just sounds way easier to make the team better without Mikko than it sounds imo.

I could see that, and I think it's the only time information gets out other than the player and his agent.

They get to say it's a rumor to the player, with the player also having it stuck in their minds.

Notice there was never even a whiff of it with Landeskog. I think it's a Sakic type move for sure.

I don't know if they could unless Landeskog returns and is really good.

That and improving the defense/3C situation could make the team much better balanced.

Mikko didn't do shit against WPG last night. It's after nights like that, that I hate the idea of seeing this team even more top heavy than it already is..

@dahrougem2 has better sources :D

ROR forced his way out as an RFA, and Barrie was used to shore up 2C because we had Makar. Not even remotely similar scenarios.
They didn't bring Rants to arbitration as a RFA but it wasn't easy at all if you remember correctly, he missed the whole training camp and they couldn't sign him to max term.

There are more similarities between those 3 than you'd like to believe.

I’m not sure, but all I know is that there is zero chance Mikko is traded by March. Of course if somehow it happens, I’m gonna feel stupid but for now I feel comfortable that it won’t happen

Like what? I can't remember the last last time an Avs rumor hit.

I thought he signed right before FA because he secured the 8th year?

Yeah, just before free agency opened. I mean he went the whole season, playoffs, etc. and signed a day before free agency started. I was replying to a post stating that if Rantanen hasn’t signed by now(January 12th) then he’s a goner. Landeskog signed much later than that.

The specifics are escaping me at the moment so maybe someone else can help me out here? I just remember Renaud being the only one to report multiple things that ended up becoming true.

Not the kind of rumors you just put your finger up in the wind to figure out either. The kind of rumors that only someone with a well placed source would know.

This goes back many years, over a decade I believe. I don't think there's been much recently though.

Again, I think this one is very unlikely, but who knows.

It all comes down to if they believe that they have a chance to keep him or not. It's possible that they don't want to go above 12M for Rantanen and they have been told that it won't happen.

Thats fair. I just can't recall many instances where we knew for sure a player was being shopped. Barrie was the last one I can definitivly say for sure.

If the Avs are willing to sign Mikko 12m x 8 (96m) and he's looking for 14m x 7 (98m) I'm not sure why Mikko wouldn't take it unless he just wants a change.
