Rumor: 2024-2025 Trade Rumors and Free Agency Talk | The Slow Crawl to the Season

This is just posturing straight up. Trading Mikko in the middle of a contention season would be insane... Unless it's for EP I guess, but at this point that's still a pretty massive downgrade. But they didn't do it with Stastny in way less of a contention window, I don't see any mid season trade they can make that doesn't immediately make this team worse. Defin
If CMac rushed to sign Blackwood because he didn't want to trade a few assets for only one season of Blackwood, there's a decent chance that he doesn't want to lose Mikko for nothing.

If he trades him it will be for players that will help the team this year and the next season+

You said an impending UFA needs to be traded before the deadline and that we can’t trade him after the season.

The sky is also blue.

Farts smell.

These are all obvious things.
My post was more of a disagreement or sarcasm of that report than actual analysis. There is no way Avs are trading Mikko now or in 2 months which is the trade deadline. We’re talking about the 3rd leading scorer in the NHL, and it’s actually pretty amusing that someone would report and say the Avs will trade Mikko

Again, the Avs under this regime have never traded a core-level player who was a pending UFA.

Didn't do it to Stastny, Landeskog, or Kadri. They won't do it to Rantanen, either.
Up until last month they had never traded for a pending UFA and re-upped him long term within a week either.

Things have changed, the Avs are very low in assets and losing Rants for nothing would be a massive blow to their immediate future. They clearly don't see this year as their last chance.

The Avs had also never swapped out their goaltending duo in-season before, until they did

Nothing's changed. This regime is the same. They won't be trading Rantanen just because an extension isn't in place by the TDL.

They won't trade him if they think he has a chance to stay, like Landy, Kadri and Stastny.

If he asks for too much money and they know they won't sign him then he becomes the new ROR/Barrie.

The only reason I don't think it's possible is I don't think a team will do a hockey trade, as in one guy that's really good * not as good, but not as expensive as Mikko.

They're not trading Mikko for picks and prospects with a mediocre roster player in tow. They'll walk him to UFA. I fully believe they're prepared to.

However, if a high end player is coming the other way, and said team is willing to pay Mikko's price I could see it.

Carolina was referenced in the last rumor.

Even if Carolina sent us Svech+ for a signed Mikko, that's a major downgrade this season for a cup run. Sure we'd have more cap space, but we aren't swimming in assets to utilize that cap space at the TDL. I just think that there's no chance he's moved and this is all just a negotiation tactic by Cmac.

Exactly this. I fully believe 96 has priced himself out of our comfortable range. If there was a price the Avs were comfortable with the deal would have been done by now.

I think 96 has entered the RoR and Barrie territory and will be moved. The Avs have shown time and time again that they aren't going to be held hostage to salary demands.

Landeskog went to free agency and still returned.

This isn’t always the case. Just pointing that out.

What about next year though? It's a big mistake to think that they believe it's the last shot.
Would have to see what the team would do. There's a lot of variance in how good the team could be without Mikko. But going from 100pt winger to a 60pt winger would be a very big damper on the team.

Is it though if the space allows them to add now and in the future? We may not have that many assets, but you did put a + there too.

What if you can add Svech/Necas and Anderssen?

They're not getting a player of that caliber if Mikko walks.

I don't think Carolina is giving us Necas or Svech though.

Oddly that tweet just made me think that if he's being traded/extended we're waiting until after the four nations tournament.. honestly can't explain why though.

ROR forced his way out as an RFA, and Barrie was used to shore up 2C because we had Makar. Not even remotely similar scenarios.

Rantanen is a core member of this team, has been a top 10 scorer in the league since 17-18, and this management has never traded a core pending UFA in-season.

It's not happening. Unless you want to convince Nathan MacKinnon that trading the third best player on this team gives them the best chance to win. Which, good luck.

It’s a shrewd ploy. Right now, Mikko is being told by his agent that getting to UFA will be beneficial. The Avs are planting the seed of “ you can do that but at a cost”. If the Avs can get him to sign before the summer when his agents will use Marner as a benchmark, it’s worth the roll of the dice.

I could see Svech or Necas if Mikko comes signed. Mikko would be adding exactly what that team is missing in an elite game breaking talent.

In the case of Svech we'd add some cap space, but would they be able to make up for the major loss of talent on the wing in depth? Easier said than done.
