I disagree. If anything the Blackwood situation clearly showed us that CMac is trying hard to protect the little assets he has left.

If he knows he can't keep Mikko and the return can help him now (for this season) and for future years I'm confident that he'll pull the trigger.
We have a bold front office, I agree. Not that bold. On top of that, it would also require the Carolina FO thinking the same way.

I can see this trade happening in the off-season. Yes, it doesn't allow for the 8th year but gives both teams the heads-up in negotiations (assuming neither team goes all the way). But making a change like that mid-season, in contending year? Nah.

This team is trying to win it all this year as well. Trading away #4 in NHL scoring isn't improving those odds. You are not improving the team by trading away Rantanen, that's a f***ing fact.

If the Avs know they can’t/won’t re-sign Rantanen, he has to be traded. He can’t f***en walk.
He can't walk and we can't pay him more than Mack and stay real contenders. Knowing those 2 facts there aren't a lot of options left.

I can see this trade happening in the off-season.
Canes (or others) won't pay a lot to get early negotiating rights or just the 8th year. We need maximum return even if that means replacing Mikko with other players in this year's cup run.

It ain't gonna happen. This isn't EA SPORTS NHL 25 GM mode. This is a team trying to win this year. Trading away Rantanen is making those odds worse.

It's not going to happen. The best chance to win another cup is this year, not 2 or 3 years down the road. So f*** even the immediate future, if you are making the team worse this season.

If things go perfectly we can win with this team. Without Rants we can't. Imo. No way he trades him, because of that.

Your vision doesn't align with how the front office behaves. There's nothing that they have done that leads us to believe that they are trying to win this year and that's it

The front office didn't Stastny in a contract year, they didn't trade Landeskog, Kadri, or Burakovsky in contract years, they didn't trade Grubauer in a contract year, etc.

When have they ever traded important players in contract years mid-season?

It's your vision of them trading Mikko that doesn't align with this front office.

At the end of the day, this is a business, and Rants is choosing the money instead of the team. He knows full well that MacK and Cale are the guys we have built the team around. They are the ones who are gonna get paid. Everyone else, if they want to be here, are gonna have to fit into that internal cap, just like Toews and Landy. If they offered him anywhere close to what MacK is getting, he should take it because MacK and Cale are partially responsible for that top 5 production Mikko is putting up. Stop acting like you're Jagr or Ovy, or something. You don't drive the line, and you're not taking home Conn Smythe trophies in the playoffs.

And I don't care if the cap is going up, the team needs that cap space to fill holes so we can try and win another cup.

Ask him for his list of teams, and get something for him. To let him walk for nothing would be stupid.

Why would the Canes be doing this? One of the most notoriously cheap teams in hockey all of a sudden will give Mikko Rantanen 14M?

This reeks of an agent wanting to get as much money as possible for his client and being unafraid to use the media.
I think the answer to this question is obvious. At some point, you gotta go all-in and do 'something' to try and put your team over the top, no?

Canes being 'cheap' is overblown - they are near the top of the league in salary cap spending and have been for a while since they've been a top team.

So weird... why do I always feel like when someone mentions trading #96, it always seems like we get NOTHING back in return?? In this case, what's being proposed is getting #14 in NHL scoring back in return + automatically almost $3M in instant cap space. That's not nothing.

It's not like we're getting back the old carcass of Bates Battaglia in return or anything.

Are we getting something back that improves this teams odds at winning the SC this year? No, unless that trade is like Rantanen for Kaprizov.

Do I think they will trade Rants? No, of course not. But Rants is the best free agent to come along since Stamkos like 8 years ago. So, I can’t discount the possibility a team makes an offer that Cmac can’t say no to.

Agree with both these points, and also want to point out that the Canes went for a big fish in Jake Guentzel at the trade deadline last year, which also was a change in their MO.

Also also, there were strong rumors that Pettersson was going to be traded mid-season to Carolina if he didn't re-sign.

I could see Carolina swinging something big to get that game breaking goal scoring that they've lacked time and time again.

They did, but also 1) didn't give up a 1st for their big fish (was conditional) and 2) bailed out wrt to re-signing him when they also had the advantage of using the 8th year to get a lower aav than he eventually signed for.
I'm not saying this thing wrt to Rants and the Canes is just bullshit, but considering their history with this particular owner, it's kind of an "I'll believe it when I see it" kind of situation.
If this report had mentioned certain other organizations I would have been more open to having an elevated blood pressure because of it.

I forgot about Bread. Still, point still stands. free agents of Rantanen’s stature come along one every 5 years or so.
Absolutely, there are teams out there willing to pay him.

16M, like Seravalli is suggesting? I doubt that. 14M? that I can see, and the Avs should be able to match that on an 8 year deal. It would be around 12M.
