This was during his complete obsession with Tom Wilson following the 2nd Pens Cup win. When Ryan Reaves turned out to be a disappointment, he went out and got Oleksiak, who, despite being the heaviest player in the NHL at that time (I think he still is), isn't really a fighter. Then proceeded to publicly goad Wilson into a fight with Oleksiak prior to the Pens/Caps matchup that season. Wilson then concusses Oleksiak in the ensuing fight, and not long afterward, Rutherford, with the speed of a panicked Wall Street day-trader, dumps Oleksiak back to the same team he got him from in the first place.

F*ck that old bat.

As a GM, I don't think he'd publicly call Pettersson a crybaby and tell him to grow a pair (that's basically what happened here) if he intended to trade him.

IMO Miller is on the block. The fact that he took some time off lately could be related.

Youngblood’s the best hockey movie of all time.
Stop. Please.

The current impasse is on both Pettersson and the Canucks. Pettersson should not have re-signed in a place where he didn't want to be and Rutherford shouldn't have tried to bully him into signing.

I personally think Rutherford is as rotten as they come. What he did to Jamie Oleksiak was unconscionable and should have led to his ouster from hockey forever.

If we go by CMac's comments a while ago IMO he will trade for a #5D that can play 2nd pair pretty well in the event of injuries and I think it will happen sooner than later. He also said he will overpay if he needs to in order to get the guy he wants. Pettersson seems to be a very good target but the Avs like to trade for guys with terms or could re-sign. Pettersson would be hard to re-signed considering our cap situation I would say.
This has already happened with all three trades thus far, but that doesn't mean all will be like it. I still expect a D acquisition to be a UFA.

f*** me If everything below is true they HAVE to trade him at this deadline. If the Canes are aggressive they have the pieces to keep us contenders for this playoff run even if we trade Rantanen (and keep us contenders the following seasons, too). It's crucial for CMac to do the right thing here.

I believe nothing Seravalli says. Funny how he had said nothing about this stuff earlier, while Kyper said Rantanen is looking at something slightly bellow MacKinnon number. Now, Seravalli has repeated that 14 million which was said by his agent on a free market. I elect to think Seravalli is just talking out of his ass, thinking Rantanen would want that 14 million with the Avs. That would be like 16 million on the open market, no-one is going to pay that LMAO.

Regardless of the outcome, i'm happy that we have enough options where we can play hardball with Rantanen and call his bluff if needed.

I don't want Rants traded, but there are scenarios where trading Rants makes more sense than signing him to a 14 mil+ contract.

Sounds like bulls***.
Just spinning LeBrun's old insider news that they are not close and they might have internal cap.
Seravalli is just a talking head with no real insider information.

So one of the most notoriously cheap teams in the league when it comes to giving large, long term contracts for players into their mid-late thirties will suddenly do this with Rantanen?
I smell a rat, or rather an agent.
The larger lines of the article wrt contract demands vs the Avs stance doesn't really surprise me, but I have a hard time thinking the Canes will be the team willing to give him that kind of contract.
If the author/Seravelli had come out with say Vancouver/Rags/Isles it would have been more believable, imo.
This could end up a Landy/Nuke kind of situation with his contract, though. And HFAvs will be burnt to a cinder in the process. Fun times ahead:thumbu:

Whole story smells like an agent hard at work to me.
So an agent would call Seravalli and tell him that the Canes (among others) are aggressively calling the Avs for Rantanen?

What for? This won't put any pressure on the Avs since they already know if they are getting calls or not.

Explain the reasoning behind your conclusion please.

I'm assuming that if we trade an extended Rants to Carolina Necas++ is coming this way.
That would be amazing at this point. Rants is great, he can be dominant, he's not a 14+ million dollar player - if the Avs pay him 14 million than they are significantly going to hamper their ability to ice a full team.

I'd really like to keep Mikko even though he can very frustrating to watch at times. We need a guy who scores like that. BUT if he's going to go for all the
$$, which is totally his right but is also a choice, then either we have to deal with a big headache contract for a long time or move him. I just can't see them trading him in a year where we are all in. I think it's possible we get nothing and he moves on next year, but I think he's resigning here. I just hope there's enough financial compromise and upcoming increases in cap room to not torpedo the team 3 years down the road.

Why would the Canes be doing this? One of the most notoriously cheap teams in hockey all of a sudden will give Mikko Rantanen 14M?

This reeks of an agent wanting to get as much money as possible for his client and being unafraid to use the media.

The only thing I know is Rants was a PITA to negociate with as a RFA 5 years ago.
Yeah, like everyone in that RFA class. We are also talking about a team, that didn't want to sign their captain literally until 1 day before UFA. People seem to forget this.

There are two sides to this.

But how? How is saying this will bring more money to Rantanen? What's the path?

The Avs know if they are getting calls or not.
