So in the event the cap is only 92.4M next season and the Avs re-sign Mikko for 12.5M, it would already have them at 1.1M over the cap with:

Lehkonen - MacKinnon - Rantanen
Colton - Mittelstadt - Nichushkin
Wood - Ritchie - O'Connor
Ivan - Kelly - XXX

Toews - Makar
Girard - Manson
Behrens - XXX

Blackwood
Wedgewood

Some notes:

- This is with no extras lol

- Assuming Gabriel Landeskog does not return they would have roughly 5.9M to find a couple of bottom six forwards and a couple of 5/6/7 style defensemen which I do not believe is difficult.

- Landeskog not returning IMO means no Colton or Manson trade

- IF Landeskog does return, I believe we see both of those players moved and potentially also Miles Wood

- I don't know if there's any way to bring Jonathan Drouin back regardless of Landeskog returning or not

Just some observations/thoughts:

- Did Malinski die? :eek3:
- I expect Kiviranta to be extended. TMV already hinted at it. Both sides are talking.
- Behrens is missing the entire AHL season, no chance he's ready to play for the Avs next year.

I just have this feeling Malinski prices himself out of Colorado. Not sure the Avs would be willing to pay more for his services than they already are.

I have Behrens there but that could be swapped with any random scrub defender for the 3rd pair making that money.

IMO, a Kiviranta extension is coming up next.

Don’t know when, but it’s in progress.
Hopefully, and hopefully he’s happy enough here to sign a sweetheart deal for some security after a few offseasons on the roster bubble. Plus it’ll help keep Rantanen here, just tell him to subtract Kivi’s salary from what he’s asking for so the besties can stay together. :sarcasm:

I've thought that about Drouin for a while. I guess you could choose between Colton and Drouin in the right scenario, but with Drouin's injury history it would probably take Mack pounding the table.

Drouin has to stay healthy for the 2nd half of the season. If he does and he's as good as he was before I'd bring him back.

When he's in the lineup he's one of the best bang for the buck on the team....and we need as many players as we can that overplay their contracts.

Yeah, down the stretch and the playoffs could dictate which one they keep. If Drouin keeps taking huge discounts he'll force their hand. Like if he takes another year at 2.5 or 3m, they'll collect assets with the trade and keep him.

If he really wants to keep playing with Mack he can force it that way easily, and not be on a sub 1M contract either. I wouldn't put it past him.

I'm expecting 11.5M to 12M for Rants. I think 12.5M would be more total money than he'd get in UFA. To match that with 7 years in UFA it'd have to be more than 14.28M per season.

No way he signs that cheap, if it's the same agent as Blackwood. Now I think the starting price for Mikko is 13,5 mil a season. Even 8 years.

Colton and Wood have to go next off-season.

Colton's clause turns into a M-NTC on July 1st. Not sure how many teams (RIP CapFriendly), but he no longer has total control. He's cooled off after the hot start (2G/0A in 10GP) and is back to his normal ~40pt pace, which isn't what a team with a limited budget needs to spend $4M on.

Wood is self-explanatory. He's got four years left, so it's a tough sell. But bad contracts get moved all the time, so it can be done. Barclay Goodrow is hooooooorible, yet SJ willingly took him on. Wood is at least a decent 4th liner.

Colton should be a easy move, especially because he is fairly young and 4 mil for 40 points isn't that bad. He is OKAY, but because they know we are desperate the return would be disappointing for us.

Colton at least has few qualities GMs value, he can score goals(good shot) and plays physical game. Those are highly valued skills.

Wood is total dead weight I agree, but at least it's lower cap hit.

I have hard time believing that. They just threw 5,25 for Wood.

Rantanen is one of the best players in the league. Easy to offer over 12 mil higher cap.
This is what some people around the league who hear things have said fairly recently though. The Avs have been reluctant to go anywhere near the MacKinnon contract. What Rantanen camp is asking is not more than that, but somewhere around 11.75-12.5. This is why the agent has signalled that they believe they can get to 14M in the open market, 14x7=12.25x8

I still don't see the Rantanen contract playing out any time soon, because everything is up in the air with Landeskog.

The original O'Connor contract of 3x1.05 seems reasonable. Adjust the value for inflation if you want, make it 1.2 or .3.
It's not that I think the LOC deal is bad (I maintain that I don't think he'll regain his form until next year, if he doesn't, then I'll start getting concerned), I just don't think it's generally a good practice to sign 3rd/4th line guys to long-term deals. Certainly has been the case with Wood.
