Is it fair for every other player who took a reasonable deal? Some of whom will lose their place in the team to accommodate that one guy squeezing out every penny they could. Every single player we have took a reasonable deal. Those who wanted to cash in are gone. As it should be.
That’s not true—MacKinnon did not take a discount this last time, nor should he have. Cale’s deal at the time was fair market value as well. Toews didn’t take a discount. Neither did Blackwood.

I don’t buy this notion that guys are just automatically considered selfish if they’re looking for a big payday following a decade-plus of superlative play, especially when it’s likely the last big deal of his career. That’s on management to find a way to make it work.

But I also don't like folks forgeting the Rants was also amongst the very first RFAs to make it HUUUUGE. 9.25M for a second contract a year or so before he signed his would have been laughable. Yes he's provided a long time of superlative play, but he's been paid pretty damn handsomely for it as well.

I think they get a deal done. I just don't expect many of us to be really happy with it. Especially as it gets into the second and third years.

How the f*** are we going to fit in his 5mil contract? Even at 50% that not something we can really afford. I doubt we can get him at 75%>

I doubt Utah would move him, but I think Valimaki would be a good partner for Malinski. Not much of a scorer but pretty good defensively

He did take a discount. This is an absurd statement. Like he didn’t know Matthews was going to sign for well more soon after. This snapshot in time focus isn’t connected to a reality that guys didn’t anticipate a cap increase soon after.

He was literally the highest paid player in the league until Matthews signed. Don’t talk to me about absurd statements.
