Dubas took the job in Pittsburgh with the understand that he'd have to try to keep the team competitive, while having the freedom to build how he wants in the future. There are ton of moves that is simply trying to bring guys into help Crosby today and following that 'competitive' piece that was always a losing cause... and that's what he's being judged on now. Ultimately what will determine his success is his accumulation of picks and prospects. He's gathered 2nd-5th round picks, grabbed some prospects, will be keeping his firsts, etc. Guys like Koivunen, Brunicke, Swanson, Lucius, 25-28 2nds, 24-27 1sts will determine how Dubas is doing.
The craziest part to me is that unofficially Dubas has like a 10 year contract based on how long it will take for Sid to retire and then for him to rebuild lmao.

Better have a mighty nice quid pro quo to get players to give up job security.

If I was Crosby, I'd ask to be traded.

It would be one thing if he was totally washed and was just collecting a pay check, but the reality is that Sid can still play, and he can still contribute to a team that's trying to win the cup.

I get wanting to be with the same franchise your whole career, but the competitive side of him has to be yearning for a last run.

Yeah... I think he technically got 7 (which is still an eternity), but basically all that has to be shown at that point is progress on building back. Which is essentially "look at all these shiny toys not in the NHL."

Dubas was fine and I’d even say good at drafting. His trades and contracts sucked.
I'd say that's fair. He also had two moves blow up in his face in the worst way possible--Garret Sparks and Travis Dermott. Not saying both those guys working out would've been the difference between winning a Cup and what they ended up being, but it cost them some desperately-needed stability in the lineup at two very important positions.

In hindsight, he should've negotiated way, way harder with Marner and his dad, er, agent, and set a lower number that was closer to market value. If he didn't blink, then they should've sent him packing. I bet they would've gotten some really great pieces in exchange for him.

For all the shit us fans throw in Mikko's general direction, I'd argue Marner is at least twice as frustrating, if not more.

I agree that he was handcuffed in Toronto. I don't think he had a say in signing John Tavares, which severely hampered the Leafs cap flexibility and their future contracts for Matthews/Marner/Nylander. However, I think his contract negotiating abilities are horrible and he gave his stars literally everything they asked for without the team getting anything positive. He was taken to the cleaners each time.

I think it remains to be seen what kind of GM he is, but we'll have to wait a longggg time to see that because so long as Sid is playing, that team wants to make the playoffs.
To be fair, like you said, the Tavares contract he didn't have anything to say at and that largely projected to the Matthews and Marner deals.

Not like Treliving did any better with this new Nylander deal, though Treliving also gave Huberdeau that disastrous contract (albeit, just like Dubas, I don't think he had all too much to say in that).

He's also been somewhat hamstrung in Toronto and in Pittsburgh. I'm not saying he's some elite GM in the wings, but he didn't have final say in TO and wasn't allowed to move Nylander for a dman and had(at least to start) to compete with the Penguins and not "retool".

I think it's hard to fully judge him so far... I think he clearly has some flaws that can improved upon, but when his rebuild of the Pens eventually happens I think it'll be easier to fully judge him as a GM.
It's not THAT hard to judge him... I think he STINKS!

See, not that hard.

I swear anytime these statwhackers fail they find a scapegoat.

I swear anytime you bitch and moan about the statwhackers you continually forget they've been integrated into almost literally every single organization in the National Hockey League, and their data is used extensively by the team you root for. The only reason people like you like to single out Dubas is because he's a nerdy-lookin' guy who isn't a former player.

If anything, Dubas's ultimate undoing was when he started becoming a size queen and started to ignore the fancy stats.

FTR I was being (mostly) facetious about blaming Shanny. He does deserve some blame though.

Dubas was content to lay the blame at Shanny too.

Because Rudo doesn’t actually know anything about hockey
Yeah I don't get the fascination with this guy...he's got a bit of a scoring touch but in order for it to make a difference, you have to play him in the Top-6 and the rest of his game is shit so you don't want that guy in your top-6 and he's an ineffective bottom-6 guy. Huge pass.
