I mean I think he would've made more in the NHL, even playing for league minimum. Switzerland isn't exactly cheap, and while the clubs pay good in European pro hockey standards, the salaries in Europe are nothing like in the NHL.

All that said, he's going to be playing in a big role (unlike in the NHL), less games, shorter distances, Switzerland is a beautiful country and quite high up there of places where people would probably love to live. And going back home is half day's drive instead of flying for a day across the pond.

Market value, I have no doubt there would've been a team willing to offer 16M next summer.

MacKinnon's contract already looks like a huge bargain
This is close to the same percentage of cap as Mack... .1ish % more. Assuming ~92m will be the cap number.... which is going to show what impact cap movement will have on contracts.

Food for discussion... same percentage as Panarin got would equate to about 13.1m on a ~92m cap.

This is going exactly as some of us expected for sure.

Mack sets the new upper limit for 1 year, then Matthews jumps him by a little, Leon jumps Matthews by a little more, McDavid jumps them all by even more.

Definitely shaping up for a ~$15-16M hit for Connor next summer.

This definitely sets Mikko up for something in the $12-13M range I would think.

I don't think he will hit 16, but 15 looks like a lock. Cale will reset the defensive market in the summer/fall of 2026. Probably looking at 13.5+ there (1.5m less than McDavid).

McDavid can't take 15 if Drai makes 14. The difference between those 2 is more than a million.

I expect McDavid's cap hit to be in the 16-17M range.

30M for 2 players is rough...but the Avs will have like 40M locked into 3 players soon so yeah, we can't call the kettle black.

The PA and his agents had to basically convince McDavid to take more on the first go round. Given the complications with depth, I can't see him pushing 17m. He'll be the highest paid player again, but I doubt it pushes that high.

Yeah that's my thinking as well.

I think he'll take a small discount despite it not really looking like a discount. $15M would still be the highest in the league by $1M, but also probably like $2M less then what he could easily get.

Oilers will have $50M spent on 4 players soon.
And one of them will be the epitome of this classic meme:
