He was a wrecking ball during the Blues cup run and played an important part in their bottom 6.

I'm surprised that no team offerred him an NHL contract TBH. No one wants him as a 4th line winger at league minimum?
Sure. But he’s in no way worth giving up Buch for.

Well, he did nothing for the Rangers, and they gave up a very good, albeit problematic two-way player in order to get him.

It was a shitty trade for the Rangers no doubt, but Buchnevich was going to be traded regardless. They could not afford him at the time, and wanted to give Kakko and Kravtsov a shot at the top-6. A big mistake in retrospect, because they have tried like 10 different wingers next to Kreider and Zibanejad since he left and none have worked. But apparently separating them is out of the question, so they keep trying to find different square or triangular pieces to shove into a round hole...

Drury absolutely butchered the value for Butch, but they were not going to keep him.

He's lost quite a bit of skating since his ACL injury. If he can keep pace and healthy though, he's piece that could be quite effective on a 4th line. He really doesn't take all that many penalties considering how physical he is.

It's true the relationship between Boosh and the Rangers was fraught to say the least, but as the Avs and Joe Sakic proved, that doesn't mean you can't wait it out and get proper value for a disgruntled player.

The other thing that trade exposed is that the Rangers, despite their Prez Trophy-winning ways, are still very average at even strength. Buchnevich is exactly the kind of player they need and have failed to find since dealing him away.

Apparently Cale got hitched recently, let's snoop on some wedding videos to see which Avs were invited to speculate who's going to remain on the team long-term.

Wasted Cale sighting. It's like watching Halley's Comet go by.

Also, that guy holding the cowbell is lucky he's still got a thumb.

"Started at development camp."

Translation: American kid showed up to Winnipeg, realized the town is a shithole AND in Canada, requests trade.

American players IMO have become the number one flight risks for signing contracts in the NHL. Way, way more than the myth of Russian kids.
Canadian teams are so f***ed with that shit.

They don't want to talk about it publicly too much because of the fear that it would spread even more but they have to deal with it all the time.

You can have a hard cap and draft well all you want but when players don't want to play in your city or you have to pay them more to do so the playing field is extremely stacked against you.

It's one thing to "mishandle" a kid like Cutter Gauthier in Philly but when they request a trade only because of where the team is located that's a very different situation.

To be fair not all Canadian markets are the same . Vancouver for example is likely more attractive. The taxation issue is probably more important in the end anyways .

It's becoming quite the trend that American NCAA guys force their way out. Russia draft risk my ass, more like be careful with NCAA.

The differences in how covid was handled certainly doesnt enhance the appeal of playing in Canadian cities. Some might want to believe thats in the past but theyre still standing in the shadow of this. Ignoring this is head in the sand.

Even if some rationalizations are specifically linked to covid, it can still add to a more generalized negative perception.

The American and NCAA factor.

Vancouver is really looking to increase the physicality of their forward group. It was already a fairly physical group... Sherwood added to it. DeBrusk and Heinen aren't soft (especially DeBrusk). If Blais makes the team, they'll have a few guys who are heavy presences up front.
Sherwood and Aman on the fourth line for cheap. Too bad they never got a shot here and Bednar insisted on playing guys like Jost and Kaut and OO who clearly had no NHL future.

Sherwood probably could have gotten more of a run, but that's less on Bednar than the front office in not cutting their losses on Jost earlier. Aman was a situation where he wanted guaranteed NHL time (at least for part of the season) or the option go back to Europe... the Avs didn't oblige.
