Looking at the D man options. @RoyIsALegend or anyone else, can you sell me on Marcus Petterson? I haven't watched him closely enough out east, and wasn't able to catch the Pens game the other day.

The Avs need their D man acquisition to help them defensively and on the PK. They don't have a strong need for offensive support. How is Petterson defensively compared to say Manson?

Was him getting walked by Val an anomaly for him, or a bit of a known pattern?

Is he better, worse, or about the same defensively as Oleksiak, who I also haven't followed too closely recently?

Is Petterson solid defensively, or more of a 25-30 point defenseman, that's average defensively, and more of an offensive guy, than a two way, or defensive guy?

Like Oleksiak, Petterson leads his team in PK time, so that's a good thing. On a 9th ranked PK compared to 19th in Seattle too.

I see he's not overly physical though, despite his height, and he's a bit lanky at 6'5" 174 lbs. Also see he was the NHL's most hit player himself at one point, which is somewhat concerning given the Avs injury history.

He needs to be healthy enough to play in the playoffs, especially with Manson so injury prone, as the only other big body.

Pettersson is a big, rangy defenseman with above average skating for his size. He doesn't really play all that physical but will rub his man out. Won't be knocking anybody head over heels or going out of his way for a big hit. Hot and cold defensively. Not as good defensively as he probably should be or what people who don't watch him regularly think he is. Capable of a good first pass and can skate the puck up ice. A two-way defenseman more than either an offensive or defensive specialist. He's strong on the PK because he has the agility to close down players and use his long reach, whereas a guy like Oleksiak is a pure crease clearer type.

Oleksiak is better defensively, there's no question about that.

My main concern with Oleksiak is he will be another guy who either passes sideways to Malinski or he'll be rifling poor passes up ice.

We have one of the worst and undisciplined breakouts in the league. The Avs breakout will regularly have all 3 forwards out of the defensive zone, usually two guys through the neutral zone and one guy at the opposition blueline. Nobody is circling deep for a short breakout pass and making themselves available to the D.

A Bednar defenseman has to be able to:

A) retrieve the puck with speed
B) be comfortable skating it up ice and out of the zone themselves, usually evading forechecking pressure
C) be able to consistently make 25-30 foot passes to forwards that are way too high on the breakout

This is why we see a guy like Josh Manson trusted. He can skate very well for a big guy and move the puck up ice.

Oleksiak is an average skater, at best, and a relatively poor passer.

I just feel that a guy like that would get buried by Bednar, regardless of how much he'd help the PK and be a net front presence.

I'm not a huge Pettersson fan, but I'm trying to suggest somebody that would work with Bednar's system and still get reasonable ice-time. Pettersson can skate well, make a good first pass, and be passable defensively for the most part.

Thanks. Yeah, I agree based on that, he's a more likely addition for CMac and Bednar's preferences.

Can't comment on Oleksiak's skating and passing, as I haven't watched him closely enough lately either, but I tend to lean toward that type of D man addressing the Avs weaknesses more.

I think the breakout issue may be coachable though. They have the personnel in the top 4 at least to have a good breakout/transition game. They had a great one before with basically the same guys outside of Byram.

I just think outside of Manson, the Avs have a weakness with their down low, and net front defensive coverage. They can outscore this issue in the regular season, but in the playoffs it becomes a bigger problem, and was IMO the main reason they lost last year, along with turnovers.

Walker didn't work out here, I don't see Pettersson either. It's a tough system to work within, but Avs would be better pairing Malinski with someone that uses him for breakout and is better defensively. They need another PK threat. Bednar loved having Nemeth for a reason.

Walker appears to be one of those puckmovers who needs to be in a grinding defensive system to work. He was fine in LA and appears fine in Carolina, wasn’t great in Colorado. Then again pairing him with Jack Johnson and having Georgiev behind him might not have been the best idea.

How is Kevin Bahl looking this season? Or Erik Gustafsson ?
Bahl sucks. Big guy who gets walked on a nightly basis. Gustafsson is sucking this year but it’s Detroit so it’s hard to tell. Put up decent numbers his previous two seasons. I personally think he isn’t good enough defensively to warrant consideration but admittedly haven’t seen him play a ton.
