Why would rebuilding Montreal even consider trading Caufield, signed long term, for 6 months of Rantanen?

“What does Montreal add” lol what

We wouldn’t get Caufield 1 for 1 at this point.

What planet are you guys on?
It was more just curiosity, and it wouldn't be 1 for 1.

You might be ignoring some folks. There have been folks wanting Gibson for quite some time on this board. @Richard88 was responding to someone talking about Lundestrom and Gibson @50% being 4.7ish.

My comment was about Gibson alone. I don't think he is the answer...in fact, I think Justus might be the better of the two. It's been four years since the dude has given a shit. I can't see him all of sudden caring anymore. I'd rather stay as far from Gibson as possible.

Has he played yet this year? I'd certainly give our two Finns a real shot before making that trade though. Especially with how Annunen has played.

Any hypothetical Rantanen trade comes with the assumption that he's re-signing with the team that trades for him

Yeah, the only way you get something significant for Mikko at this point is a three team trade, or flipping those assets immediately in a couple of deals near the TDL.

No good teams can afford him, and he isn't signing with a bad team. There is a reason no one can come up with a legit trade idea.

Basically..

They're either signing him, or he's walking to UFA.

I mean I would assume with an extension in place.

I'm starting to warm up to the idea of Gibson, maybe it has to do with Blackwood's numbers lately (though I can't blame him).

Gibson easily has the highest ceiling of any goalie available. He also has a calm demeanor and shown he can perform in big moments. Mind you, that was a long time ago now, but the ability is still there. I can't blame the dude for not giving a shit for playing on a bottom team while living in sunny California cashing checks.

I think a trade to the Avs would spark him quite a bit. I trust Justus to be reliable in the regular season, but if last night showed anything it's that he can still lose his confidence if things start to go a little sideways. We need a goalie in the playoffs with a short memory. I don't like the length of Gibson's contract, but at 50% worst case we can always retain on it again if needed and move it fairly easily. I think a trade of Georgiev + something for Gibson @50% makes a ton of sense. Gibson's age/personality just fits this team better than any other goalie out there.

Bonus if we get a 4C out of the deal or something else of use - maybe we can grab one of their many young players that's being blocked from a shot at the roster.
I'm on the fence about Gibson. On one hand, I believe he would be a lot better on a better team. I think his numbers are a microcosm of playing for Anaheim, and a trade to a contender might rejuvenating for him.

However, on the other hand, his numbers have gotten progressively worse the last few years, and he seems to get hurt a lot. It would cost a lot to get him and have 50% retention, and he still has 3 years remaining on his deal (including this year). If he isn't good, that's a bad trade.
