This season reminds me of the year when the Avs lost to the VGK. The TDL sucked that year. Who’d we pick up? Wasn’t it Soderberg and Nemeth? I understand the contention window is not going to remain open forever but I hate the idea of a panic buy or being stuck with a 30+ year old player’s multi-year contract.

Mittelstadt falling off a cliff is the biggest problem for the team.

Part of me, would just like to see them ride it out, because I think he’s likely to be better at some point. And it’s a bit ridiculous to get rid of a guy who everyone liked 6 months ago for an ageing upgrade.

Then there’s the other part of me that says they need to be aggressive this year and can’t gamble on him.

It’s a tough situation and that’s the biggest decision of the trade deadline for McFarland/Sakic.

It’s early obviously, but I’m not sold on the moves so far. I saw it somewhere that Renaud Lavoie said the reason the Necas/Rantanen trade happened was because the Avs thought they had a trade lined up for Miller? Kind of makes sense.

I have a hard time thinking Mitts innately sucks as badly as he’s being castigated on these forums. His play now is big 0. Clearly his play last POs and early this season shows he has the ability to succeed. I was one of those who badly wanted Jones. Cementing the top 4 would have IMO been a bigger deal to this team’s long term success than replacing Mitts.

Ok..

So nothing was said about it being because of that trade. Just that they thought they were getting Miller and he blocked it.

Then him blocking the trade was debunked by a Vancouver beat writer.

The only thing we know, is they tried to get Miller.

Everything else is speculation.

I think having a weak 2C is hard to overcome and it’s more important than a top-4D. Especially when the Avs defence is good, when healthy.

I can understand the logic on both sides of the Mitts debate. Either way… they’ll have a hard time if he doesn’t find his game, or he’s not upgraded.

I just don’t believe this is the year to leave bullets in the chamber. MacKinnon is 29. He’s not falling off a cliff right away, but the start of the decline will come soon.

This was the same argument the year before they won the SC.

Upon sleeping on this most recent deal. I sort of think the Avs might be done. Not to say they won't try to make another move but I don't know if the have the chops to get it done. Hopefully they see something in Lindgren that we're all missing and he turns it around playing a lesser role with us.

Why pay for retention if they’re done

Who would have thought that the Rags would be sellers at this year's deadline. Disaster of a season for them.
I will give a ton of credit for Drury for actually doing it. They are still technically in the fight, and conventional wisdom would suggest that they are trying to push over the line. Especially considering he has already fired two coaches, and done a lot of roster reconstruction. One would think he's worried about his job instead of making the sensible choice of restocking on a lost season. Not many GMs would do it under these circumstances, especially considering what owner he has to deal with.

This team largely not exclusively win a SC because of their transition defense. I think defense is way more important to this teams identity . Although it would be wise to seek an upgrade 2c. If they can’t I like drouin and nuke as masks for mitts

I think the retention indicates the opposite actually. We still have cap to use

I don’t think a big ticket defenceman is what this team is going after. I know people are going to act like the Lindgren acquisition is a nothing, but that’s obviously not how the Avs see it.

If they go after someone like Parayko with term it has to be dollars going out too, since there won’t be rentention on the contract. If you go after a defenceman you have to move money out from the forward group without a replacement.

IMO someone with a year, or two left is more likely, where they can get the team to retain to make it work. Or, Mittelstadt is moved out with assets for an upgrade.

Nelson, or Marchand are the guys I’d be looking at.

Kadri, as suggested earlier is interesting too, in a Mitts upgrade situation. A lot of ‘old guy’ options, but I’m ok with it. Worry about the future later.
You're wrong. The Avs can easily add Parayko, and all they'd have to do is move Wood.

Below is a 23 man roster with Parayko added. It is exactly $2.376m above the cap ceiling. Trading Wood and running a 22 man roster frees up $2.5m and puts the roster $124k below the cap ceiling.

And how old was MacKinnon that year? The two arguments have nothing in common.
But that’s just it. If it’s not done right then not only do you not win the SC but you also saddle the team with older players on multi-year contracts. How does that help the contention window? If the assets aren’t there to push you over the top and the pickings are pretty slim, do you try to force it or bide your time?

Bide time for what, though?

For MacKinnon to be on the wrong side of 30 and when Makar requires the biggest contract in NHL history, further reducing our cap availability?

I'm done biding time. All-in, every year until those two generational stars crash.

I want..

The more I read about Lindgren that defense would cause teams to dump and run instead of dump and chase in the playoffs, and they all have legit mobility.

Lol guys get off the Parayko fantasy for your health.

First off, the Blues aren't dealing Parayko.

Secondly, if they do it won't be in the division. The Leafs, for example, would pay to get him.

Plus they are clicking of late and only 1 point out of a playoff spot. I'd be surprised to see them sell at all.

Just not happening here.

Parayko is signed for 7 more years after this one? I can see why they'd want to trade him.

No clue, maybe they envision a scenario where they can reactivate Landy prior to the playoffs? I'm not the numbers guy. My job is to be... well now that I think about it, I don't really have a job around here. Please don't waive me @forsbergavs32

Your job is to be pissed off and say “have we lost yet?” So you are useful.

That said, you’re still going on waivers along with @Bill Peckerskull and @RoyIsALegend
