Colton at 4M doing nothing on the 3rd line as a winger is a bigger issue than Wood at 2.5M
100%. Colton had a great start to the season, but can't have a guy making that much with 4th line production. And he's not Lehkonen without the puck either.

And can't move Colton now, sigh...

Wood at 2.5 could be worse because 2.5 in the grand scheme of things isn’t a huge number, but 1) his term is a major problem and 2) he’s one of way too many guys making just a little bit more than they’re worth.

Wood at 2.5 is bad value for money, Colton last year was neutral value but this year is negative value. Kylington is bad value. Mitts, I don’t really know yet. But is currently bad value. That right there is 9.05mil of cap space being used horribly. Manson’s also been pretty erratic in his play this year and probably shouldn’t be in the top 4. So make than 13mil of poorly utilized cap space.

Than you have Middleton, Malinski, CDH taking up another 2mil of cap space on guys who are our 5-6dmen who shouldn’t be more than 7/8’s at the absolute best.

It’s death by 1000 cuts. The Wood contract isn’t horrible compared to some other deals out there. But add in to a bunch of other players not being utilized properly and living up to their contracts the team is far more locked into their situation than they could be.

Which granted a lot of this all comes back to drafting as well. Yes they’ve drafted well enough to use some guys as trade shit to improve the team, but even having one or two more LOC type guys would make a world of difference for this team.

2.5M to skate around aimlessly and take bad penalties or 4M to skate around aimlessly and do nothing.

One guy actively hurts the team. The other guy does absolutely nothing out there positively.

Both can f*** off for all I care. They seem to care more about being butt buddies and dude-bros more than contributing meaningfully on the ice.

I love that CMac has been more on it the last year or so overall. But yeah Pro-scouting overall has sucked so much. If this team loses in round 1, they really need to get some new staff.

I'm just saying...get even more fast skaters.

Acquire Josh Anderson at 50%, get Werenski via miracle, Parayko @ -1000% retained (that's right, the Avs get to charge cap to the Blues). Boom. Profit.
Parayko hasn't really been on lists but seems to be in discussion over the summer and last deadline. Would cost more I would assume but wouldnt need retention necessarily.

If Manson is out for any period of time we need to strike NOW for a defenceman. We can't play with only 3 NHL calibre dmen. Also Malinski cannot be the 2nd best RD.
I suspect it’s fortuitous that Manson is injured now than in the POs.

Why doth that matter? Doth thou not see the scathing indictment it be?!
The implication of just having two drafted players in the lineup is that they've missed on basically all their draft picks. I was simply pointing out that they have actually gotten some value from their drafting which is indirectly reflected on the roster.

Gotta try Colton back on the top line to just see if he can click there again and add something of value to the lineup

Colton - MacKinnon - Drouin
Lehkonen - Mittlestadt - Necas (or Necas at C)
Parssinen - Drury - LOC
Kivi - Kelly - Wood

Or keep Necas up there and reunite Lehks - Mitts - Dru who have shown to work well sometimes.

If anyone is interested I posted a link in the injury thread to the full Nuke Russian interview I found on Reddit.

Most of Colton’s production came early in the year playing in the top 6. His regular linemates don’t produce much

MacFarland can't even trade for a 4th line C he has Parker Kelly who's not a starting NHLer still playing minutes 50+ games in. Doubt dude can fix anything.

Traded away our best goal scorer though...

Oh boy, i really hope Sid is ready for the 4 nations..... It will be his personal highlight this season because the Pens are going nowhere......

Wood's a microcosm of what's wrong with this team.

4th liner based on ability, 3rd liner based on contract and role.
The issue is that no team should be committing 6 years+ to bottom six forwards. How many times have teams done this, and had to trade their way out of it. Casey Cizikas, Barclay Goodrow, list goes on.

I was even hesitant on signing LOC to a 6 year deal, I just don't think it's necessary to pay 3rd/4th liners when you're going to inevitably need the flexibility moving forward.

Agree wholeheartedly.

For the longest time, the Avalanche were non-players in Free Agency. The biggest UFA contract in the Bednar-era is still the Jonas Donskoi deal (4 years, $15.6M), which was in 2019. They didn't sign a single multi-year free agent again until 2023, when this Miles Wood deal came out of nowhere.

Colorado's bottom-6 was horrendous prior to the Wood signing (Cogs, Malgin, Meyers, Newhook, Nieto, OC), so I understand the need for aggression. But MacFarland obviously thought Wood was a fit for this system and would score mid-teens goals every year at a bargain price. Horrible miscalculation.
