what's everyones thoughts on Tommy Novak?

i remember last year he emerged as a legit top 6 for Nashville and I think maybe he could thrive in this system and is only signed for 3.5 mil.

i havent seen him extensively so I dont know how good his skating is but surely it can't be worse than mits.

My impression is that he's a tweener, but his underlying numbers are always good and Nashville has never given him good ice time.

I think Novak is a better winger than a center, though. So if the Avs added him, I'd be thinking 3rd line scoring punch rather than Mitts replacement. And my worry there would be his lack of physical play and mediocre skating. He struggled in the playoffs last year.

dang, yeah was curious as a high value trade even if Mitts went the other way, Novak could thrive in this system even though Mitts has a higher ceiling.

If novak makes a better winger than C then we're square one unlessssss Nash wants Colton then it's a huge upgrade

Novak - Drury - LOC/Wood would be a great third line

I agree. Mittelstadt was the center to target from Buffalo. Alas his skating/endurance/stamina doesn't seem to be working.
I know the eye test and metrics support this for certain stretches but from a pure production standpoint I am not sure we can expect more than 40 to 50 pts with no meaningful power play time. Him and Colton were getting power play time which buyoed their production. Mitts had 8 pp points before Nov 9 and only two since, added to his already concerning drought/confidence. For Colton 5 of his 9 pts were on the pp and has only had 7 points since returning none on the power play. This coinceded with health but also a horrendous pp before the Rants trade. This certainly plays into the perception of these players.

And Makar's minutes need to be reduced and PK minutes are the best to cut with him.

I disagree, he’s pretty good on the PK and I think he’s a big reason it’s improved as the season has gone on. It’s nice to have a #1 defenseman that can actually play on the penalty kill unlike Quinnifer (@RoyIsALegend )

We need a big dman who can PK. Crease needs to be cleared.

I want to add a defenseman that can move the puck and add some more speed and offense to this game. The Avs always claim they want size and pay the premium to get size but Bednar never utilizes it

Buffalo up to something?

Weekes was the first one to break the Mittelstadt-Byram trade, so he does have sources in Buffalo at least.

I'd be open to adding Anderson. But Avs need to prioritize a top 4 RHD before they make a move like that.
I completely agree. An additional winger would be a luxury addition. They need to focus on 2RHD and 2C (if Mittelstadt doesn't show improvement) before they add another winger. A 3LHD would arguably be more important too but if they move a forward (eg. Wood/Colton) to make room for Jones then another forward would be a must.

I still think a middle six RW would be good, ideally a right shot. Just curious on everyone's thoughts to what degree it matters that we don't have a lot of natural RWs. Parsnip has typically been C or LW, Nuke before he came here played LW, same with Lehky, Drouin, Colton etc. I don't think its a huge impact based on the system and how certain players play (Nuke, Lehky) but on the breakout angle to the ice and goal matters to some degree, stick positioning for board battles among other things. Thoughts? I feel like an over abundance of LW and a potential Landy return is why they need to move Colton and Wood so other players can play their more natural positions 🤔

Which is why a Bjorkstrand or Tuch would make a lot of sense.
I agree with that. Just think a RHS would nicely balance the 3rd line. Bjorkstrand and Anderson are two names that intrigue me on Frank's list, and are both guys the Avs have ties with and prior interest in to varying degrees.

All of this is true but that wasn't the point of my post. The point was to reduce Makar's minute. Jones is very good on the PK so our PK should still do very well but now you would have a fresher Makar when he is playing 5v5 and in the 3rd period.

I mean is the act of eye-emoji and city landscape getting old? Yes. Does he have sources? Also yes. Like I said, he got the Byram-Mittelstadt trade before anyone else.
Thats nice and all that he has souces. But this troll shit just sucks. The side eye thing can be anything from a major trade to Buffalo selling a f***ing NFT.

Yeah, if you're spending that much just keep Manson.
If Manson gets pushed down to 3RHD they need to go cheap at 3LHD, and with Manson on the right they'd probably prefer to have more of a puck moving type at 3LHD which is the easiest position to fill. They could even give Behrens a shot though I suspect he'll need plenty of time in the AHL to get back up to game speed first. Anyways, point is that spending $3.25m is probably a bit excessive for that position given how easy it is to fill it.

Do you think Kylington could take that spot? Or does he still have a lot to prove?

I wouldn't mind him or Sam Malinski as the #6

Just once I'd like the 3rd pairing paid to actually do their job, Malinski has been okay.

I might spend some time looking at other teams 3rd pairings and see money spent
