More importantly, you can't have two guys who routinely only get 10 minutes. A 10 minute 3rd pairing means the other two pairs play 25 minutes.

I could understand Nelson if it was simply to add him to Colorado, but definitely not in exchange for Mittlestadt.

It was the night of, I caught part of it, Cobra caught all of it (not that there was a ton to catch).

I think Nelson is the better player in a vacuum, but I don't personally think the team should go there. Nelson's only a few months younger than O'Reilly, his production has dipped, and he's a pending UFA. Trading for and extending a guy who'll be 34 at the start of next season doesn't seem like an Avalanche-type move.

Misleading tweet, though. That user clearly values individual skaters over the way teams play. IMO there are plenty of teams now playing faster than the Avs do.

Cozens is a donkey. Poor man's Matt Duchene who tries to dangle every player in sight like it's still the WHL. I wouldn't give up anything of value for him.

Yes even if you think Manson is adequate (which he arguably is) in spurts due to an injury. He needs to be pushed down to #5 when the inevitable injuries occur over a playoff run.


The Avs are one bad hit from having Manson as a #3 and either Malinski/CdH on the second pair.

Not to mention the fact that Manson has only a year on his contract so a solution needs to be found this year before the cap skyrockets.

The Petterson Vancouver got may reset the market on desirable but not that great second pair dmen at 7 millions. It would be wise to get a guy signed for a few years.

Manson seems like he's well liked and a warrior on the ice. He'd do well in a 2.5m bottom pairing role. Like a Miles Wood who's actually worth his pay.

I agree. Mittelstadt was the center to target from Buffalo. Alas his skating/endurance/stamina doesn't seem to be working.

what's everyones thoughts on Tommy Novak?

i remember last year he emerged as a legit top 6 for Nashville and I think maybe he could thrive in this system and is only signed for 3.5 mil.

i havent seen him extensively so I dont know how good his skating is but surely it can't be worse than mits.

Come on now...tell the truth: you keep hating on him because you picked him in your fantasy team last year and he didn't produce as much as you thought.

This is why Jones is a good solution. Other more average Dmen are soon going to be commanding crazy caphits, but at least with him you have cap certainty at the position for 5 years without an inflating cap having an impact.

It's also why it makes sense to target players with some term left right now in general, not just Dmen, rather than pending UFA's. But those guys might also be pricier to acquire unless teams really want to move them.

I still think a middle six RW would be good, ideally a right shot. Just curious on everyone's thoughts to what degree it matters that we don't have a lot of natural RWs. Parsnip has typically been C or LW, Nuke before he came here played LW, same with Lehky, Drouin, Colton etc. I don't think its a huge impact based on the system and how certain players play (Nuke, Lehky) but on the breakout angle to the ice and goal matters to some degree, stick positioning for board battles among other things. Thoughts? I feel like an over abundance of LW and a potential Landy return is why they need to move Colton and Wood so other players can play their more natural positions 🤔

Which is why a Bjorkstrand or Tuch would make a lot of sense.

We wont win shit with our 2C playing like this for nearly 4 months....

With ~$5.6m in capspace that would leave 2.85m left to spend on a Dman. For example you could still fit Dumoulin at 50% ($1.575m) or Lindgren at 50% ($2.25m).

Or alternatively you ship Colton to NJ and treat Anderson as his replacement, using the ~$1.25m savings towards Seth Jones.

I'd be open to adding Anderson. But Avs need to prioritize a top 4 RHD before they make a move like that.

Novak is a hard guy to gauge. I don't think they'd bring him in to replace Mitts, as that could be a net negative. However, he could be brought in as some insurance and might be a buy-low candidate.

Question is - was he a flash in the pan? I like the player and obviously the Preds are a mess this year but they aren''t exactly dripping with Center depth so I'm not even sure who you'd move to get him. Colton would have to be moving out most likely, perhaps in a separate deal.
