Yes, he's not been great lately, but honestly - what depth player is consistently playing at the top of his game across 82 games? If he did, he would be a top line player, not a depth one. He was great early on, not so great now. He'll probably be pretty good again this season.
Colton's contract is not bad. Nor is Manson's, btw. They're mid-tier/2nd tier players, but good ones. They bring a physicality to their game that ups the $$$. Good players with some flaws. Precisely the "depth players" we'd be begging for if they weren't here. Precisely the "depth players" we currently want more of right now.
Colton is a ~20g/40pt guy (across a 82 game season), who plays a relatively simple (and physical) game. Those attributes/numbers get guys ~$4M per. That's the market. We've got two of them, they're pretty good, all things considered, and we'd be begging for them if they weren't here.
I can't fathom the people who gripe about Manson and Colton at $4M, claiming they're the problem. They're not.
The problem is 2C. Mittelstadt. Period. End of story. That's the problem.
And if they don't solve that problem, none of the rest of the story matters.
P.S. This is why I don't get the Jones discussion. The Avs have a formidable Top 4 defensively. The Crosby discussion I get. Though I think that's a pipe dream.
