I can't really figure out the obvious next move for the team. Outside of getting a new power play coach that is.

The Jones thing is fun to think about, but doesn't actually seem that realistic.

Everyone is going to be bidding on Brock Nelson too, and I'm not sure he has the speed to really be the answer.

We had the Necas/Mikko thing nailed.

Bring Naz home. Mitts for Nasty Naz.

Or make it bigger and include Andersson or Weegar.

Gotta wonder who CMac is kicking tires on.

Last season he brought in Mittelstadt, Trenin, Duhaime, and Walker. Bednar only cared for Mittelstadt and the other three might as well f***ed off to Siberia for all he cared.

That sort of thing has got to be maddening for a GM. CMac must be worried that whoever he acquires for depth will go to Bednar's doghouse within 5 days if they don't do EXACTLY what he wants.
Who cares?
This team ain't going nowhere with the man who is kicking.

A Domoulin type trade is the next obvious one.

The 22 man roster below leaves $5.599m in capspace... roughly $1.4m less than Landeskog's caphit of $7m...

If Landeskog were to be activated he'd essentially take Kiviranta's spot (who could be sent down or traded maybe), so that would free up another $775k, and so the Avs would only be $626k over the cap - as shown with the roster below.

With that number being so low it's quite possible that they may already have the necessary capspace to cover Landeskog coming back, if they've managed to accrue at least $626k. They've been on LTIR so it's kinda complicated to know if they've accrued anything or not, but either way it probably wouldn't be difficult to find a way to squeeze Landeskog in somehow if they need to.

Full retention on Rantanen sounds like a lot, but his real salary is only $6m this year. Half of that is $3m. And pro-rated to about 1/3 (wince there's about 1/3 of the season left) is $1m.

Conversely Hall's salary is $5.25m. Pro-rated to 1/3 is $1.75m.

So they saved themselves $750k in real cash by moving Hall and retaining on Rantanen. And also gained ~$1.2m in cap space. While getting paid a 3rd.

They'd probably have gained that 3rd for Hall at the TDL anyways, but with that approach they wouldn't have saved as much real cash. So they come out ahead.

(Note I made an earlier post on this subject and think my math was a bit wrong in that one, even if my point was the same)
It still doesn’t make any sense to me. They gain so little on this and the trade literally doesn’t happen if they don’t broker it. I mean, they couldn’t even get some nothing seventh rounder to save face!?!?

I still think this is gross incompetence on the part of Davidson, who has not yet proven he has any idea what he’s doing.

I still wonder what that whole Pittsburg teaser from Weekes was last night. Did he actually hear something or was does he just really like the skyline?
The fact that multiple ESPN honks and Biz were tweeting it tells me they heard something, also the Seravalli nugget about a much bigger deal he'd heard about, tells me there is/was some smoke there.

So if it's even someone like Doumolin at 1.575 that they add they'd need double retention, but it's possible lol.

Wood’s $2.5m probably needs to go.

If you got rid of Wood you could probably go bigger on the D acquisition. Not quite enough to fit in a realistic Jones number like 6 or 6.5M though.

If you move Mitts, and bring in Brock Nelson at 3M that might get you there.

You don't have a 2C for next year though. Unless Brock fits really well and takes a smaller shorter deal.

That would be some balls on the table shit.

Looking at the big picture, most of the trades and UFA signings in the CMac era didn't go well for the Avs.

His track record isn't good with Wood, Colton, Ryjo, Mitts, Tatar, Brannstrom and all his deadline rentals.

Newhook trade was good but he turned it into a bad contract (Colton) and used the late 1st on a player that may never play in the NHL.

Hopefuly the Blackwood, Parsnip and Necas acquisitions are the beginning of a new era.

With the way the Cap is I just don't see them being able to fit someone like EP40 in here unless they move another large contract or get Colton to waive to Vancouver. Mitts may have to be our guy and we gotta hope Nuke coming back and eventually Lando are enough to get him going.

For EP (or Miller) Mitts and Manson would have to go the other way (which makes sense for Vancouver because they want a C and a D).

Then we'd have to replace Manson for a cheaper guy.

Yeah, no home runs, but nothing crippling either.

Blackwood could be his first out of the park.

They can do Miller for Mitts without trading Manson and have enough left over to fix the 3rd d pairing.
