I wouldn't recommend believing things you find on X.

Seeing how the Necas narrative mentions them looking for a star player and Colorado, they seem to allude to Rantanen. What would a trade like that look like? Would it pretty much be a hockey trade swap with how Necas is performing and the cap difference or would we expect more from Carolina? I also like the Islanders peices with Nelson and Mayfield, though instead of Palmeri I would check on Pageau.
For me, it would look something like :

Rantanen, RW
Malinski, RD
+ maybe picks and/or prospects to round it out

for

Necas, RW
Morrow, RD
+ maybe picks and/or prospects to round it out

That as the base would make a ton of sense for both teams. For the Hurricanes, they get their game-breaking scorer that they've needed for a the last few years. They also get Malinski who can help them now on the backend instead of waiver fodder like Ty Smith. They give up Necas - who's a very good player in his own right but that 2 year contract they gave him last summer that leads him right to UFA is a clear indicator that he's living on borrowed time as a Hurricane. Morrow is a solid RD prospect who has the potential to become better than Malinski but probably isn't there yet.

So just like the Avs did when they acquired impending UFA MacKenzie Blackwood, it was reported that they found out what kind of contract extension he was looking for and if they were comfortable with that when making this deal. I see this as no different with the Hurricanes. IF they are interested, they surely already have some idea what Rantanen seems to be looking for and IF they are interested, you would think they want to go all-in. They just need to know if he would want to sign there or not. So if a deal like this were to happen, I would expect a long-term extension to be announced a few days afterwards.

People can say 'the Canes aren't going to give up a player like Necas just so they can add Rantanen' but in my view, they will if they want him. The Avs probably don't get better in the short term with this deal but adding a prospect like Morrow would certainly help for the not-too-distant future.

lol

Zero chance Carolina trades Jarvis.

People really need to come down to Earth on what a return for 3 months of Rantanen would get us.

And no, he’s not signing an extension before hitting free agency. Let’s use our brains, please.
I agree with you that there's zero chance they trade Jarvis. However, Necas is certainly not out of the question - seeing as he's as likely to get traded as ROR was when he got that 2 year arbitration award.

It wouldn't be just '3 months of Rantanen' type of return though because any team that's going to give up what's needed to acquire him is going to be a team that wants to get a jump on UFA season and get him early and get him signed.

Otherwise, the Avs are better off keeping him for this Cup run even if that means they can't or won't bring him back.

Call me crazy but if the Avalanche do end up trading Rantanen to a team like Carolina and obviously a guy like Jarvis is off the table, I'd be pounding the table for Nikishin to be included in the deal.

I think that guy steps in right now and is a top-4 NHL defenseman with top pairing upside.

If Rants is traded to Carolina you can bank of these 2 things:

1- They will agree to a contract beforehand, likely 8 years

2- The centerpiece coming back will be Necas. Not Jarvis. Not Svechnikov. Not anyone else.

If we got nikishin, bring him and bardakov over at the same time

Necas is a decent enough player, but it's a considerable downgrade for someone who's going to be in the same exact position a year from now. You're just better off finding common ground with Rants and getting the deal done.

Adding Nikishin would give me more motivation, but the impression I have is they have no intentions on moving him.

He's not going to be a 14M player a year from now, especially not if he's a "considerable downgrade".
