I wish CMac was a member of HF Boards....

We'd already have Brian Dumolin here getting himself adjusted to our system and it would have only cost us moving from the 2nd round to the 4th round in this years draft to do it!

Malinski is obviously in way over his head with the role and responsibility being asked of him right now with G out... But I'd still like to see him get a legit quality partner on that 3rd pairing and play with them for 20 games to see how he looks before pulling the plug on the player completely.

Toews - Makar
G - Manson
Dumolin - Malinski

Could still work quite well IMO and then you dont have either of CDH or Middleton playing a regular shift.

Remember the rumor of Byram for Connor gaining steam a few years ago? Now I'm just getting irrationally mad that we gave Byram up for Mittlestadt. Holy hell, if he doesn't turn it around that trade puts a huge dent on our Cup chances.

Thanks for posting this. It's pretty much what I figured.

It's not surprising why the Avs are hesitant to give #96 a big giant raise on the $9.25M he's already making especially when you consider :

In the 44 games Rantanen has played this season and out of his 60 total points
- 51 of those 60 points have happened with MacKinnon on the ice
- out of the NINE points that happened when #29 was on the bench, there were 2 empty net goals by Rants.
So that's a total of 7 points this season when he's been on the 2nd line/without Mack. You can point to Mitts having a really bad couple of months but if you're going to be paying a guy 10-11-12M per year, he pretty much HAS to be a play driver.

These numbers have been more balanced during post-season play:

TOI w/MacKTOI w/o MacK5v5 TOI w/MacK5v5 TOI w/oMacKPoints w/MacKinnonPoints w/o MacKinnonTotal
2023-2024198min66min151min60min7714 (50%)
2022-2023106min43min73min40min5510 (50%)
2021-2022249min153min171min142min91625 (64%)

Anytime the two get separated, Mikko gets the short end of that stick (at least in the last few seasons). Lehkonen/Nichushkin get bumped up to play with Nate, whereas Rantanen gets to play next to Compher, Johansen, or a struggling Mittelstadt. Last night he was taking shifts with Kiviranta and O'Connor :help:

With Malinski being benched mid game yet again, I have to think there is urgency to find some solution fast. Either an outright replacement, or a partner that can cover him.

Agreed BUT we are running so thin on assets. Avs have to decide what to prioritize. IMO they might find a LHD for the 3rd pair who can play 2nd pair if needed, and Malinski gets the JMFJ 10 minute per night treatment.

The interesting salary cap dynamics that will impact the league as a whole in the coming seasons are having an effect on the Avalanche right now. Nathan MacKinnon has set the team's internal salary cap with his $12.6 million AAV, but that deal was signed in 2022 under much different market conditions. Rantanen, a 28-year-old one-time 50-goal scorer who leads the Avs in goals this season by a wide margin (he also leads the league in empty netters) is in position to net a huge contract just as the cap is set to take its biggest one-season hike in years, with more growth to follow. But would the Avalanche entertain the idea of his contract coming close to, or surpassing, MacKinnon's?
I'm not sure Colorado is getting traction in extension talks. There is a belief they already offered $90 million over eight years ($11.25 million AAV) earlier this season. It doesn't sound like the two sides are close, still well over $1 million apart and maybe even $2 million. So Rantanen's name is out there and if these contract negotiations don't progress soon, he'll be one of this season's biggest trade targets.
It's believed that three teams have made serious pitches for Rantanen, but have been turned down so far as the Avs still hope to re-sign him. Could Carolina have been one of them?

JT2C has extremely similar points per game as Lehkonen (0.483 for the ginger vs 0.478 for the Finm) and it's only this close because of the Nate effect on Lehky and his time on PP1

So, at least 3 serious offers have been made to CMac that were rejected because we want to re-sign him.

I wonder if there's an internal timeline to get it done before we actually listen to offers? Or are we willing to let him walk if a deal doesn't get done? That's still unclear.

Exactly. This perfectly sums up how we need to use the eye test more to evaluate a players worth as I’m sure you clearly know that lehky is the far superior player. Thank you for posting such a great example.

I don't know. I've heard that the 4 nations break is being used as kind of a pre-deadline deadline for a lot of stuff. Could be that. I don't know what they will do at this point.

When we had 4giev they might've considered trading Mikko if a deal couldn't get done by x date since we were looking like a bubble team. But with Blackwood playing at a Vezina level lately I have a feeling they'll keep him and figure something out after the playoffs, whether that means trading his rights or re-signing him.

I mean the Cmac wouldn't be doing his job if he wasn't covering all his angles with the Mikko situation. He has to be gauging his market for a potential trade and also be preparing for how to move if he's lost as a FA.
