If Mikko gets traded to the Rangers I guarantee it’d be for Laf+ not Zibby. Which would be better than for Zibby but would still not be a good trade imo. If they do move Mikko for Zibby that’d be a near window ender imo.

If the Avs were to trade Rants to NYR, I'd need Panarin, Fox or Trocheck as the return if I absolutely had to lose Mikko.

NYR would never consider either Bread or Adam. While Vinny might seem the worst of the bunch, he would solve our 2C situation for a couple of years at 5.625M per (cheaper than Mitts!!) but... I also believe he has a full NMC this season that turns to a 12-team no trade list this summer. He'd have to be okay with it.

I'm not sure...but if Joe Sakic, on a conference call that included Gabriel Landeskog, Nathan MacKinnon, and Cale Makar saying we understand that things haven't been going great in NY this year, but we would be absolutely thrilled to have you here isn't enough to get him to waive, then maybe the follow up call from Nuke (providing him with additional... resources, yeah we'll call it resources and information) should.

Basically a move like that, followed by dumping Mitts, would actually leave the Avs with whatever other assets they captured from the Rants and Mitts moves, but they'd also save roughly 100K "downgrading" from Mitts to Trocheck. Then they also basically have whatever money they would have been setting aside for Rants to go and plug holes.

I hate it. But I'd like it better than having Rants walk for nothing.

Trading Rants for a base involving Zibby would be the most slam the mutha f***ing contention window shut move to make.
Zibby contract is atrocious. IDK if that's even tradable without including a big asset(s) or additional players with it.

Seems like if this were to happen, maybe a three team deal with Vancouver could work for all three teams?

Again, there has been no such report. Lavoie wasn't reporting anything, he was merely talking about the Avalanche being a type of a team that would be willing to pull of such a move even in a cup window. While there has been exactly zero times the Avs have done something like that, and on the contrary, have many times kept their pending UFAs as rentals and then let them walk during the summer.

I believe the Avs would be willing to pull the trigger in a trade that would help them win a cup this year and in the future. Pulling off such a trade is pretty f***ing hard to do.

I don't really believe it, but that wasn't just idle speculation from Lavoie.

He's basically saying he heard the Avs would move a guy like Mikko rather than lose him for free. He's not just spitballing with his comments, he's using them as an example of a team that would do that, and stating it matter of factly. He would have phrased it differently if he was speculating.

Fair point that the Avs haven't made a move like that, but they've changed course and done a few things lately that they don't usually do. Traded a #4 pick for a 2C. Traded both goalies mid season. Paid more in AAV and term for a goalie. I don't think past is necessarily prologue with this team anymore. They've become much more aggressive.

I do think the most likely reason these comments were made though, is the Avs wanted to leak them to pressure Mikko into signing.

Does anyone have a link to where he said it?

Cued up with context.

Yeah that's not spitballing, he used the Avs as an example of a team that don't want to lose Rantanen for nothing. Implying that there are other teams like the Avs out there.

People really hear what they want to hear

Yeah, he's using the Avs with Mikko, as a counterpoint to Florida with Bennett, who he doesn't think will move as a pending UFA.

Again though, I think this is likely an intentional leak for posturing and leverage purposes.

CMac isn’t Sakic so we shouldn’t be surprised if his decisions deviate from past history. But I very much doubt CMac would move Rantanen except for value. Zibs? Absolutely not.

So I've been thinking about the Landy situation...if he does come back before the playoffs then what do we do? Toews is no longer injured so the LTIR theory went out the window. There's the possibility of Nuke never coming back but it doesn't look like it's the case at this point.

That leads us, again, to a Rantanen trade before the deadline.

What would make the most sense here is trading him for a pending UFA/RFA that makes 3M or less right now but is due for a big raise next year or later (because he's that good). This way we could have him + Landy this year and then use Rants' cap hit to re-up him later.

Is there such player out there?

I don’t really think anyone thinks Cmac will move Mikko this year. But this news of moving Mikko definitely stinks of a negotiation tactic.

Laf?

The new contact is already signed, too. Kicks in next season.

Why would the Avs use the French guy who rarely speaks to English media? Doesn't make a lot of sense.

IMO that'd be a significant downgrade, I'm not sold on him. Can the Rags afford Rants?
