Eh, whatever. Things got way more contentious during the Landeskog negotiations and they managed to work something out.
I think Landeskog was a different situation. Guy really wanted to stay here and lift the Cup as captain.

I don't think Mikko has the same loyalty to the organization (and that's totally his right), and I think the Cup win changes the equation a bit and makes it more palatable to take on a new challenge / secure the bag

It will because all of a sudden you have a 2C and don't need Mitts and his cap hit.

EP (11.6M) + Landy (7M) = Mitts (5.75M) + Rants (12.85M)
Actually in this case it would be more something like this:
EP + Landy + something else from the Rants-EP trade + something from the Mitts trade = Mitts + Rants.

I think I mentioned I really didn't want either Petterson or Miller a week or two ago. But if the Avs decide they just can't make a deal with Rants and Vancouver offers Petterson, I don't see how you can pass that up.

Totally agree with you. Either he extends or he has to go. Losing him without compensation would be a big mistake.

He wanted it so much, that he was less tha 24 hours from free agency before signing
To clarify, I was not part of negotiations nor do I have inside knowledge of them. I don't know what (if anything) moved over the final 24-48 hours.

But I do think the Avs front office suspected they could squeeze him a bit. And I don't think they necessarily have the same evaluation for Mikko.

Again, all of this is based on my judgment at as outsider looking at the personality of these guys' public personae. I could be completely wrong.

Maybe it's just me but Pettersson alone isn't enough for Rantanen. Better to just overpay him if that's the other option.

How about if we add something to Rantanen to get a legit star player in return?

Perhaps consider Rantanen as the "Huberdeau" in the Tkachuk trade:

Huberdeau + Weegar + 1st + Schwindt for Tkachuk + 4th

The "Weegar" piece if you target a center would logically be Mittelstadt since the center would take his spot.

I wouldn't trade Mikko for Pete

IMO the only reason you trade Mikko is if they've decided better depth is the way to extend our window and if that's the case Petey and his $11.6M ain't gonna help with that.

Again, Miller is who I would target. His $8M compared to Mikko's $12.5M would mean giving us an additional $4.5M to upgrade somewhere else on the roster.

In theory that could mean going from $2.5M Miles Wood to $7M Troy Terry purely for arguments sake. O

Again not suggesting any proposals or talking trade values but just from a cap standpoint.

Drouin - Mack - Nuke
Terry - Miller - Lehky
Colton - Mitts - LOC
Kelly - Parsnip - Kivi
Ivan

From a cap perspective that would still work, with Mikko(~12.5) + Wood(2.5) out and Miller(8.0) + Terry(7.0) coming in. Realistically Mikko is probably even more than $12.5M quite frankly. I have a hard time believing if he were willing to sign at that number that it wouldn't already be done. I suspect if he leaves it's because he and his agent know where the cap is heading and are actually asking for $14M+ on an 8 year deal. In which case I get why the Avs aren't signing up for that just yet.

Edit: It's also worth noting that $7M could also be Landy, not Terry. If Landy ends up returning.
Pettersson at $11.6m would absolutely help the depth if the alternative is Rantanen at $13-14m. That's a difference of $1.4-$2.4m which is essentially 2-3 4th liners capwise.

Not to mention that moving the cap from the wing to center would be a far better allocation/balancing of capspace. If there's anything the Avs front office are pretty adept at it is finding affordable wingers that work in Bednar's system, like Lehkonen, Nichushkin, Burakovsky, Drouin, NAK, Kiviranta, etc (the same can't be said for their ability to find centers) so it would likely be a lot easier to build economically around EP at 2C than with Rantanen. Especially since they already have a good group of cost-controlled wingers.

Drouin - MacKinnon - Nichushkin
Lehkonen - EP - xxxx/Landeskog

EP being younger also has its benefits as he could essentially take over as 1C down the line when MacKinnon starts to decline to a 2C level. As it stands right now the contention window will 100% close when Mackinnon stops playing at an elite 1C level. But MacKinnon/EP down the middle would mitigate that aging curve.

The second you put this idea out on the main board, expect a flood of proposals involving Hoglander. Rantanen + Mittelstadt <> Pettersson + Hoglander...”to even out salary.”

The Avs might be better off getting Pettersson + 2 1sts for Rantanen (as trade capital). Then trade Mitts separately for a D or a RW.

I don't see much of a difference at all. The rhetoric got REAL contentious between the organization and Landeskog before the deal was finally signed. We're not even seeing that level here...yet.

Time will tell, I would be shocked if some kind of agreement wasn't hammered out before July 1st.

I remember Landeskog's camp, most likely, leaking to the media that the Rangers would go 7 years and $8m AAV just a week or so before he signed his new deal.

I think the extra year benefits us a lot more than usual because of the high numbers in play. Say 12M from an extra year, it'd raise the AAV for a 7 year deal by 1.7M and that's just to match us. To beat us by any significant margin it'd take something like 5-10M on top, so let's say another plus 1M to the AAV (this beats us by 7M overall). So an offer to beat our 8x12M would need a 7x14.7M by an UFA team.

Pettersson would be great. A guy who apparently doesn't get along with noted bozo JT Miller. Stick him on a team with MacKinnon and he'll walk away from his contract to go and farm otters in the Yukon.
