For a team that has held on to defensive depth and made certain they could backfill to move one (who will be moving on now)… losing another would be out of character.

Though I’d argue Manson would be the smartest to move.

I would agree Manson is the smartest move and likely would pull a pretty good haul from a team like Toronto. I have a very hard time seeing them move him just due to what he brings, but if they did who would you target to take his place? Hakanpaa? Dumba? Would the cap savings be enough in either case?

Yeah probably will. That’s going to have to change regardless.
Love Bednar, but it is a weakness. He seems to treat every game as if it were a battle that must be won, but ignores the 110 game war. I think he also puts a lot of trustin players to tell him when they need a break, but players like Mack and Makar are not the types to tell him that.

Whatever RD rental in that mold is available.

Yeah it is going to have to be another busy deadline and an incomplete roster until then. Just have to hope Bednar won’t run the top guys into the ground before then.

Having a proper 2nd line should help this year IMO. Our 2C for all but 20 games last year was RyJo.

Mittelstadt should help alleviate the pressure on the top line a fair bit.

If you can build out:

Lehky - Mack - Drouin
Landy - Mitts - Mikko
Wood - Colton - LOC

Toews - Makar
G - Manson

Any leftover money should be spend on the Defense IMO. You can get away with scrubs on the 4th line, and just add another bottom 6F or two at the deadline for fairly cheap. And it'd be a way to allow some kids a chance to earn a spot, we know Kovalenko is gonna be one of those 4th line guys, I'd say Foudy should be given a good shot as well.

But the Defense is IMO the most vulnerable to suffer if an injury hits. If the Avs have the cap space available, I'd like to see them spend ~$2M or so on a legit #5 that can play spot duty in the Top 4, that way if an injury hits they aren't screwed on the back end.

Chatfield is who I wanted but $3M was probably a little too much. If Ferraro is available and San Jose would retain, they should absolutely be involved with him, though it's really tough to figure out his value. With full retention, probably quite a bit honestly.

We saw Parise as a second line winger and the third line was completely useless and untrusted once LOC went down to injury (which he often does).

Finding a way to get positive play out of your 4M third line C is critical. If Bednar can't trust Wood and Colton with more minutes things will still look ugly come playoff time. They can't ride the top 6 through an entire playoff run if the bottom of the roster doesn't play.

IMO it is still entirely likely that the top line plays similar minutes, Mitts picks up a couple and the 3rd/4th play minimally. Towes/Makar are going to be in the 24/25 minute range for sure.

Yeah, basically the 2nd line's increase in playing time will come at the expense of the 3rd and mostly 4th.

I'm honestly beginning to believe Bednar when he says stuff like MacKinnon and Makar will tell him if they need a breather. I don't know about y'all, but I would expect a champion to always want to be on the ice in order to make a difference. No way in hell is Nate going to look at Bednar and say pass on his next shift. It's Bednar's job to watch and monitor his players and adjust ice-time accordingly to keep the team as sharp as possible and the players as effective as possible.

Maybe this is where getting a more seasoned AC would help Bednar. You know, fresh ideas, eyeballs and all that.

Lehky, Rants, Landy, Nuke. And if Nuke doesn’t come back than Drouin is very clearly coming back.
@The Abusement Park nailed it. If Drouin is signed, Nuke is an inevitability. The Avs have plenty of wings… Lehky, Rants, Landy, Drouin (I think he’s signed), Wood, LOC and Kovi are 7 of the 8 wings penciled in for next season.
Here's our top 6 wing situation as of right now:

Rants: Good to go
Lehky: Surgery. May or may not be ready for game #1
Landy: Will try to play at one point this season but may or may not be able to do it
Drouin: Not signed, becomes UFA in 2 weeks
Nuke: Who the f*** knows

This list is a hot mess, we have one single guy that we know will be there to start the season. Everyone else is a question mark.

The start of the season really isn’t nearly as relevant as the mid point or end. IE Avs can’t go out and get a top 6 guy because 4/5 will be planned to be playing in January.

So what’s your solution? Spend what little cap space we have on more wingers even though we very clearly have those 4 spots filled?

The right call remains to trade the one guy winger we know will be there if he doesn't commit to 8 more years at 10M or below. Then use his cap space and whatever assets we can gather and go get Brady T and profit.

It will never happen I know. But forgive me, I'm temporarily fixated on the idea of getting one of the Tkachuk boys on our team. It'll pass in a couple of weeks, I sure.

There's no solution. That was in response to "the Avs have enough top 6 wings".

Truth is, we don't know.

In a perfect world, they'd add another top 6 winger and have Landy start on the 3rd line. But I don't know if there is anyone available that could work.

Actually we have zero. We don't know about Rants yet. He didn't show up for most of the games last season. :sarcasm:

In case you guys are wondering what Mitts is up to, he’s in the lineup for team Germany in EURO CUP24
