Should be a mainstay for the first shooter of a shootout, right between the circle, head high, give em something to think about.
Bobby Hull would lol

Mailloux has a great shot n will help PP2 once he earns a FT spot. Laine should help, Hutsons development will help. It's improved this year. Trending the right way with more on the horizon.

Show me the numbers. PK and Markov were dynamite
They only had 1 year where they played together and had a top 5 PP (5th highest in 2012-13) and it was the short 48 game season.

Outside of that short year, between, 2010 and 2016, the years Markov and Subban played together, they never had a PP rank higher than 19th.

In 2010-11 the Habs did finish 7th in the NHL on the PP but Markov only played 7 games.

On the PP…Markov + Souray >>> Markov + Subban.

I honestly find that hard to believe because you're not accounting for the other elements to the souray era powerplay. Markov/Subban I remember being a force but having zero help. It was just them walking the blueline. Either way Markov was an elite player.

Not sure what you find hard to believe, I'm providing you with facts, feel free to fact check if you're still unsure.

You said they were dynamic together on the PP, they were not. That's not me making it up, they just weren't that good together on PP, certainly not as good as Markov/Souray were (albeit for a shorter sample). The Habs PP was 10th, 5th and 1st in 3 consecutive years with both Markov/Souray on the point (Kovalev also a factor obviously).

I remember Markov and Subban being much better at even strength and that's probably where you might be mixing things up.

I do agree though, Markov was an elite player…my favourite player on the Habs during those years and probably in my top 5 favorite Habs players all time.

Markov/Souray, Markov/Streit, Markov/Bergeron, and Markov/Wyz were all great power plays. Unfortunately we don't have anybody that shoot the puck like those duos had. Souray, Streit, Bergeron and Wyz all had absolute canons. Then you add Kovalev on the half boards and those pp's were lethal.

PP is sitting at 21.5%, 11th in the NHL.

When Laine returns, if he goes to the Huston unit we might see some interesting combos:

CC-Suzuki-Slaf
Dach-Matheson

Armia-Newhook-Gallagher
Laine-Hutson

Armia is too good at possession to remove him I think. And Gallagher has been too good to do so, so Heineman is the odd man out. Just guessing at what MSL would do. For me, I would do this:

CC-Suzuki-Slaf
Laine-Hutson

Gallagher-Dach-Newhook
Matheson-Heineman

I feel like putting Hutson on pp1 would solve a lot of issues.

Two big problems this season have been the inconsistency of our top forwards and the lack of production from pp1.

PP1 has been struggling for a while, and Hutson is our best offensive weapon, so he could help out that unit a lot with his creativity and playmaking ability.

If he helps out pp1 score more goals, then that means Caufield, Suzuki, Slaf, and Dach will be producing more. Producing pts makes players feel good.

If the pp make those players feel good, they'll start playing better at EV and be more consistent.

Keep playing Suzuki as a bumper and it will never improve.
Newhook in at bumper Dach out and Suzuki playing his strong side.
I'm not even going to discuss the Hutson situation it seems to me the more noise being made about it the more the coach will dig his heels in.
He's really coming across as a stubborn SOB this season.

This is the formation from which Laine scored tonight (with Hutson in, as predicted).

Hope they continue to use it.

I didnt hate Dach on pp1 like others did but he wasn't gonna shoot so having two legitimate shooting threats on pp1 is helping a lot.

That allows Dach to QB pp2 which is a more suitable role for him.

Wonder who gets bumped next year when Demidov draws in? Personally it'd be Suzuki for me since Slaf is your bumper net front guy.

Best PP the Habs had stats wise in that era was markov-streit-kovalev-koivu and I can't remember the 5th guy... I think it was Higgins but he also got hurt I think.

The Habs had a consistently good powerplay in the 2000s, in general.

Can't remove Suzuki since he's the only one capable of winning faceoffs in that unit.

Demidov will start on pp2, but when he eventually gets put to pp1, it will likely be one of Caufield/Laine bumped down to the 2nd unit.

I feel like it might be possible that we end up with the best power play now with Laine and Lane on PP 1. And if not this year, with Demidov next year, we’ll be in the running

Might have to move Slaf to pp2 and have Suzuki Caufield and Laine rotate in and out of the bumper

It won’t be Suzuki. Faceoff guy and best playmaker up front.

Also, Demidov replacing NS on the right would make him a shooter. (all shooters across the middle)

I’d put him low. He and Suzuki creating from the right side. NS likes to work moving towards the net. Demidov likes to work moving away, looking for high seem. Sets up a natural switch with option to feed 2 snipers.

Demidov
Laine CC NS
Hutson

Having said that …. Demidov’s arrival could mean 2 balanced units, keeping top 6 lines together. (Leave laine with Dach and plug in Newhook or heineman at the bumper)

If Mailloux can round out his game, he has the cannon shot to take that spot.

As of today the PP is 15th at 21.5%. With Laine in the mix now, I think we should see us rise back around 10th. Also the PK is at 82.6% and they say if your special teams adds up to 100% or more you're probably in good shape for PP/PK.

Kostitsyn - Plekanec - Kovalev
Markov - Streit

Unit 2:
Higgins - Koivu - Ryder
Hammer - Brisebois

2007-08. They led the league in PP%.
