Real rough year for Yak, not the kind of developmental year you’d hope for.

Still incredibly skilled. Hopefully it’s not a long term thing, needs to play amd work in some areas as much as possible in this developmental year.

Carter Yakemchuk has given the Senators’ pool the high-end prospect it has lacked since Tim Stützle and Jake Sanderson’s graduations, but they’ve got very little in the cupboards behind him (without Yakemchuk, this might be the thinnest, weakest group in the league).

I debated slotting the Senators lower here, but Yakemchuk — the best prospect in the countdown so far — props them up. There’s work to do for Steve Staios, though.

Edit: I hope the work goes a few strides beyond handing the drafting reigns over to Don Boyd and company again... We should not expect much different from that group.

He needs to have a strong finish to the year, and it looks like he will still get the opportunity.

I've been talking about how impressive Yakemchuk's stretch passes have been recently. Here's an example from last night that resulted in a point for him. It's not the best example, but it does demonstrate the kind of passer he is.

People have been posting some good clips from the last game, and I think they are generally representative and put things in context. The WHL is a far tougher league than its counterparts in the CHL, and Yakemchuk is constantly having to deal with the other team's shift disturbers. Yakemchuk plays a physical game and gets embroiled in these back-and-forths. Like Brady, he won't back down and can be guilty of having a short fuse. I wish, at times, he was a little more disciplined, but I can't be too harsh on him when dealing with the following:

Isn't WHL the hardest league to score and the most defensive orientated? Yak could definitely improve, but I do feel if he was given the same team as Dickinson or Parekh in the OHL, he'd have produced a lot more as well. But he does have the best style for a professional game out of the three.

I totally agree, but I would like to see a bit more from him. I was really encouraged by his skating after returning from injury and believed he was primed for a breakout. I think the OHL numbers should be taken with a massive grain of salt. The OHL is basically the fast-paced, high-scoring league - similar to the QMJHL of years past. The difference between the WHL and OHL are quite staggering in the terms of physicality and contested space . And on the whole, I though the WHL guys outperformed the OHL guys, especially on D, by a large margin in the WJC and this speaks to the quality of the leagues. You could also make the case that Yager was Canada's best forward. Or look at Montgomery, he was a point a game player in the USHL and has reached another level playing in the OHL. How to interpret that? Is he good or is he getting that OHL bounce?

I believe Yakemchuk could absolutely be a homerun.

W has been the higher scoring league for a while, always guys in the 110-130 range, since 2010 there have been 9 guys from the WHL that has won top scorer in the CHL. This year it's just a shade below the OHL thus far. It's the more offensive of the 3 leagues for sure on a general basis, as it's had the better players the past while.

2024-25

OHL -459 gp - 7.17 gpg
WHL - 505 gp - 7.14 gpg
Q - 404 gp - 6.63 gpg

There was a period in the mid 2000's where the W was a defensive, low scoring league filled with tough guys, that last from maybe 2000-2008 or so. I think it was 05 or 06 where they had ~5.5 goals per game or so, about 2 less than the O and Q. It's not like that anymore, on the contrary it's been the higher scoring league the past 15 or so years, but that low scoring, tough, defensive moniker it gained in those uears still gets brought up today.
