Do you think Yakemchuk has improved overall and still on the trajectory to be an NHLer and with more development/structure could be a 1st pairing RHD?
He is definitely an NHLer, and his trajectory is that of a top 4 RHD-man with an extremely rare combination of size, skill, and physicality. He will be a very coveted piece. His skating has improved and he is more risk adverse this season. You couldn't make a "Yakemchuk dangles everybody" video for 2024-2025 season.
I think he can become a #1, but it will depend on improvements to his skating. If his skating can be more in-line with someone like Mantipalo, he could be special. He needs to improve his strength and balance - speed is generally okay.
My opinion is that he is still growing. He looks about 6'4". I have compared him with numerous players in various contexts. There are always mitigating factors like angles and footwear (like when Yakemchuk is standing next to Brady Tkachuk in the locker-room, is Brady wearing sandals?, etc.). As he grows into his body, I believe he will reach another level.
He has a certain "it" factor and fairly high-end offensive instincts. For a point of comparison, Jake Sanderson has really good hockey sense, but I don't think he has high-end offensive instincts. Yakemchuk is a little bit of the opposite; he doesn't always make the most polished and efficient play in his end. But when he's running a PP, it feels dangerous, like he's going to make something happen and usually does. Despite Tulk and Kindl having godly numbers, the Calgary PP is near the bottom of the league when Yakemchuk is absent.
One of the criticisms of Yakemchuk was his lack of hockey sense - I always thought this was overblown. And when Sens fans had a chance to watch him in pre-season, I heard rave reviews about his poise and smarts. The moment was not too big! He makes his mistakes, and there are plenty of "WTF" moments, but I think the more structured game of the NHL will be to his advantage. I also think he will run a PP better than Sanderson or, at the very least, give Sanderson a run for his money in securing PP duties.
If his skating issues are mostly attributable to his rawness and will be ironed out by growing into his body, I believe he can be a #1. If his skating doesn't improve, he is a #4.
Last point, I thought the WHL D-men in the WJC were significantly better than their OHLer counterparts. It wasn't even close. I thought the Dickisnon-Bonk pairing was awful, I thought it was hilarious when the TSN pundits were yelling for Dickinson to run the PP. Dickinson has never even ran an OHL power play. My point is don't feel bad when people put up insane point totals in the OHL, Molendyk was Canada's best d-man and he is not even a point a game guy in the WHL.
