  • Benning with a goal tonight, but Denver gives up 5 in a 3rd period collapse to end their unbeaten streak at 4 in a non-conference game against another undefeated opponent.
  • Samoskevich with an assist, but Michigan also ends their unbeaten streak at 4, also against another undefeated non-conference team.
  • Uens also with an assist, on the winning goal in the 3rd, as Merrimack wins a big game tonight against a Hockey East Conference rival.

I was at the Charlotte game tonight. Here’s what I saw:

PP units:

Mamin Dalpe Heponiemi
Carrick Fleury

Hutsko Lind True Denisenko
Carlsson

Some PK units I caught:

Dalpe Fleury Olofsson McCormick
Carlsson Dalpe Wilson Carrick
Carlsson Dalpe Kiersted True
Carlsson Kiersted Mamin Twarynski

Some basic player evals. Take these with a grain of salt. I’m not a scout and it was just 1 game.

Gildon: Slow, not the best hockey IQ or anticipation of plays. In the 1st he got caught way up ice and the play went back the other way, 2-on-1 which was Hershey’s first goal. Definitely seems more comfortable in the offensive zone but doesn’t anticipate well defensively. Got absolutely rocked late in the game, he was fine though. Noticeably big out there but doesn’t seem to use it all that often.

Carlsson: At this point, a mostly proven AHLer. Played big minutes. Not sure what the official ice time was but imagine he was at or near the top. Played all situations. I can see why it’s him and Priskie that have been coming up when needed, can make some plays and the coaches seem to trust him in key situations.

Heponiemi: thought he was great. Noticeable out there, made a bunch of plays, found a soft spot and got a pass in the slot from Mamin, put in his own rebound. Relentless away from the puck, good stick defensively.

Denisenko: Honestly, mostly invisible. Skates nicely but never seemed to be very involved in any plays. Had a few shots, some missed the net. Didn’t create anything. Not really sure what to say, wasn’t bad but just didn’t stand out or do much.

Noel: Decent, seems like maybe a tiny bit of a drop off from camp. Nice pass on a 2-on-1 to create the shot for a Max McCormick goal. Wasn’t on the PP tonight which was unfortunate.

Hutsko: Pretty similar to his camp performance. Involved in most plays, good puck pursuit, doesn’t give up on plays. Secondary assist on one of the goals. If he can stay healthy he’ll be a factor eventually.

Schwindt: honestly didn’t really notice him but for the role he plays/will play, I think that’s a good thing. Wasn’t on the ice for any goals, for or against. Don’t think his line played a ton either and don’t think he was on PK.

Mamin: Nothing really new here but I think he plays a very pro style game and is basically a Lammikko replacement. He’ll put up points in the AHL but likely not a bunch in the NHL. from behind the net found Hepo for his goal.

Kiersted: Also played pretty big minutes, solid game and was rewarded with the empty-netter from the D zone corner. One of the better skaters on the team.

overall I think the standouts tonight were True and McCormick, both of which aren’t our players and with McCormick being a vet basically.

Gibson got peppered at times and overall was pretty good. Made a bunch of key saves late to keep the game tied and to keep the eventual lead. Didn’t really have a chance on any, one was flukey, another was a 5-on-3 back door and the other was a 2-on-1 one timer.

A quiet day on the NCAA Scoreboard on Saturday for Florida panther prospects.
Uens was the only Panther to get a point. He registered PowerPlay assist in their Hockey East loss in a high-scoring affair.
4 assists in 6 games so far this year.

Overall, it's been a bit of a slow start for our prospects. Hutsko's hot and Sourdif's doing decent in WHL, but I'd have expected more from Hepo and Denisenko by now, and the rest of our guys are not exactly setting the world on fire either. I mean the main "prospect guys" in Knight, Tippett and Lundell are in the NHL and doing great, but it's be nice to see some of the other guys to distinguish themselves as well. Plenty of time I guess, season's still young.

Sounds like Deni is having a hard time in the AHL. Getting the feeling that he sees himself in a higher role than he actually is/will be capable of obtaining.

Could be that he has to readjust his expectations and to start aiming for a bottom-6 spot if he ever wants to make it to the NHL. He is a good skater and can hit like a train even though he is not big. He has shown that he is a true competitor and a leader, and he has decent hands to not just be a plug.

I think Hepo's doing alright. He seems to understand that he will likely be a bottom 6 player on the Panthers, unlike Deni. You could see in his callups last season how he could contribute in this role. His production is ok for this, and he always seems to be around 0 +/-, despite being very small. He could become something like a 40-50ish pt complimentary winger playing next to Lundell on the 3rd line. Hopefully it will click for Deni soon. I think part of the problem is he still lacks enough strength and mass. Hepo isn't affected by this because he learned to work around this a long time ago.

I agree, Deni’s issues look more like head than body. He’s shooting for the moon, but he needs to get into space first.

Not surprised that Denisenko is getting fed up of the minors. In Tippett's draft+4 year, he was getting a chance to prove himself in the bottom 6 and earn time with the big club. Not getting cock blocked by Jumbo Joe.

If Heponiemi is as good as the scouting report says he is, then I don't understand why we're letting him rot down there. I know it's great to have depth, but it's also great to utilize your blue chip prospects' ELCs and let them develop. I wouldn't be questioning the AHL path if it weren't for the graveyard that our farm system has been for years now.

Signing Jumbo doesn't help this team because he's just a mascot. Sure, he can score a goal or two here 'n there but he's a mercenary on a borrowed time. On the flip side, Hepo isn't exactly battling against Jumbo since he doesn't fit the profile of a 4th liner. If there are no vacancies on the top9, Hepo/Deni isn't going to be called up.

We tryed Hepo in the NHL he has the talent, but his physical presence was not ready enough for the NHL. And Denisenko looked for me not complete enough, for the NHL also doesnt saw the scoring a Winger should bring in. He had Games to show himself in the PreSeason and every Prospect must face the Game against Tampa TopLines with mostly only Prospect in the Roster for this Game.
Thats why after that Game there is a clean Cut, show up you stay alive, only play your Game thx for trying. And how it comes, i dont saw Denisenko showing up at this Game.

Would "the Mountain" play better against Tampas Main Team, he would. So i dont see something wrong in it.
And when you loose against a over the Top Thorton, you might think about work on yourself and your complete Game.

Good news: Mamin and Denisenko get their first goals of the year.

Neutral news: A 2-2-1 start so far, busy weekend ahead with the game tonight, one tomorrow and one on Sunday (Halloween) as well.

Bad news: Charlotte loses a close one, 4-3 tonight.
They went 1 for 6 on the PP.

Hey, it's me the interloper again...

...So Justin Sourdif's having himself a game tonight.

4 points (2g, 2a) through 2 periods vs Kelowna.

I don't have highlight tweets yet because flipping between twitter and the boards on my phone sucks. I'll try to get those when I get home after the game if no one else has them before then.

But his first goal was an awesome play to strip a kelowna player and break away shorthanded before burying it.

He does also benefit from playing on a line with Bruins 1st rounder Fabien Lysell.

Kid is looking like a solid pick for FLA.

Of there's a dark cloud to the silver lining it's that Kelowna is pretty turrible.

But 4 points is 4 points.

One more point tonight (hopefully a hatter) and he'd be averaging 2pts a game through the first 6 games.
That's Captain material right there!!
It's the versatility I like about him.

One SHG and a PPG as well

He's already the Giants captain, so thats a good first step.

And I'm trying to post a picture on lieu of highlights but hf is being a bastard about it and not accepting the upload for some reason.

Damn he almost had the hatty.

Split the D on a stretch pass to get in alone, but fired it high off the glass.

Nice play, disappointing result.

There's still 4 minutes left but it feels like he's played less this period.
