That's an A+ trade for the Panthers. Jones has been one of the most wrongly disrespected players on HF for years, people don't even know what they're looking at with this guy. This really bolsters Florida, sucks to see.
Totally agree, can’t believe the retention on the deal.

I'll still take Tampa's defense and current level of goaltending over Florida's. If Tampa can add a couple of F's, I'd probabaly favor Tampa's offense (which is already ahead of Florida's this season in several categories) as well.

Yeah. Jones has played on some jokes teams throughout his career but is still a good defenseman. Especially at 7M. Thats a great move by Florida and will probably be one of the best moves all TDL. They got better. For context, a defending cup team ahead of us - improved. There's reason to view that and say okay, we need to respond. Much like teams did to us in 2022, we need a response to that.

Jones also fits their style of play pretty well as he's a great puck mover. Cant just say oh he's overrated or not great when we are looking at guys like Palmieri to push Zemgus f***ing Girgensons down the depth chart.
They're basically 1 point behind Tampa provided Tampa wins the games in hand. They're a good team as well, but adding Jones doesn't make them leaps and bounds ahead of Tampa (if they are at all this season). Monday will be very interesting to see how both teams look, but regardless of the outcome, I don't see Florida has some overwhelming favorite or considerably better team than Tampa this season.

Don't like the trade because Jones at 7M and less relied upon can be a very good player for them.
At the same time, as others have said, I'd still take our D + G anytime.
So let's get a top6RW + a dawg of a bottom6 player and we are set.

McDonagh looked cooked when traded for him in 2018 too, Jones is in the same situation. He can't handle carrying an entire defence on top of a bad a team overall but if you slot him in a team where he has support he's going to have a resurgence. And if Jones were playing anywhere near his peak level this wouldn't even be a discussion, not going to say no to a guy I can see playing very well next to Hedman if the cost is reasonable, he's only 30, read up what people were saying about McDonagh when he was on the block at the same age.
Idk Jones was never a defensive stalwart. McDonagh was overutilized in NY and I think most people thought he was a good pickup (remember a lot of talk about Tampa now having two 1D).

Jones... idk he's a flawed player that never reached the top of his potential, was overpaid and is definitely not a 1D at this point in time, but I also think this is a good get for Florida. He is still an effective player in the right situation. They definitely got better.

That's a stretch to say considering he was a 26min a night defenseman on the team that swept us.

Would we be interested in Panarin if NYR retains some salary? One year left on his deal after this year.
They'd need to retain 50% to make the numbers work for us, and then what would we need to give in return?

Panarin having value with retention is why you can ignore nay-sayers you shouldn't sign players because their production tails off as they get into their 30's, you can simply retain and then you suddenly have an asset. Anything outside 1sts and Howard/Geekie is obviously on the table for him.

Panarin being pretty bad in the playoffs aside - we don't need to go that big. Right now our 2RW is Zemgus Girgensons, any solid 5v5 players would be a massive upgrade.

If someone like Reilly Smith is available retained for scraps I'd much rather target him as a 3RW rental and spend more for a well rounded player with term (or go all in on a player like Tuch) to round out or top 6.

Guentzel - Point - Kucherov
Hagel - Cirelli - Tuch
Howard - Paul - Reilly
Girgensons - Glendenning - Eyssimont

Would be a pretty unreal forward group and fits within our current cap.

My ridiculous, virtually impossible wish would be making deals with Nashville and St. Louis (with another team involved for retention purposes) for the Schenn brothers and ROR.

Edit-Just saw Oleksiak potentially on the block. TB doesn't need a LHD but I'd be all for that addition.

Pass on Oleksiak, as good as he is, we have our shutdown pairing. If we do acquire a defenseman, should be a two way RHD.

Odd feeling we see a mega move for Tuch and maybe another forward or dman for a huge futures package highlighted by Geekie/Gauthier
Maybe something like Geekie, Gauthier, 1st, 2nd, another small add for Tuch, Lafferty, mid pick

blah, I like him but we don't need to do something insane.

This. They got better and were already good. We need a response.

Sacrifice every future needed to get Tuch from Buffalo.
The snowball effect of being able to get him would be so profitable for our franchise.
Fixing the top-6 hole with a high quality player on a bargain contract for one more season, with the cap going up an no big UFA/RFA to re-sign this offseason... Meaning in the offseason we could aim for a quality top4D and switch some bottom six players.

This would mean ending up having the best top6 in the league, and one of the best Dcores as well. + Vasy in net.

Get Tuch done and we'll be serious Cup contenders for the next 3 years at least.

If we can get Tuch while keeping one of Geekie or Howard I'll be ecstatic, he's like a custom made player that fits exactly what this team needs.
While I'd like to keep Geekie, we do have Point, Cirelli and Paul at center. We don't have great depth down the middle with one or two injuries, but we can make that work. Add Howard to the mix and let's say Tuch does end up here, we don't necessarily need him. We would still need a bottom six guy imo though. I don't think he's even ready for that come playoff time.

If he were 23/24 and not 28 and a pending UFA after next season. He's definitely worth going after but not at the cost of something insane
