2024-2025 Blues Trade Proposals Thread.

I think JR is trolling me now. His new article this morning begins:

"It’s doubtful that St. Louis Blues general manager Doug Armstrong was basing important decisions about the future of the franchise on the bounce of a puck Wednesday night at Crypto.com Arena."

Two sentences later:

"A loss could have meant putting more thought into the phone calls that will continue to come on captain Brayden Schenn and perhaps others."

Why would a loss mean more thought into phone calls about trading players if the outcome of the game didn't matter? Just tell me he's trolling me so I can stop trying to figure this out.
JR retired to a beach about 8 months ago. That article was written by an AI.

DA isnt a pay one guy 14 milly a year sort of GM. As soon as he would, the next guy up on our roster would ask for more and it sets the bar far too high. Weve had our best teams where we pay a bunch of guys good to great AAVs and have our talent spread out, as opposed to 2 or 3 guys on HUGE contracts. I highly doubt DA sees a fit w/Marner or Rant, and also they would most likely have similar offers from currently more competitive teams.

While history agrees with you, his words haven't exactly. I don't think they're scared to pursue a superstar contract. I don't think we've necessarily had a superstar though, AP was probably the closest thing but he was probably moreso in the 10-15 range of best defenseman throughout the years.

I vividly remember him saying in an interview something to the tune of we'd give out the Matthews money if we had a Matthews to do it with.

I'm not sure that we should be looking to do that in UFA though

I've honestly been chewing on the idea of Marner (or if he gets there Rants) in UFA. We very clearly have a top C in Thomas (When I say top, I mean top 10-15 in the league) - but we don't really have that top winger. Kyrou, Holloway, and Buch are all really really good wingers - but none of them is that gamebreaking elite guy. We have a couple of guys that could become that in Snuggy or Bolduc, but obviously neither is proven. We also don't NEED an elite winger, if we make up for it elsewhere on our roster, but having one sure would be nice.

Marner is kind of a weird fit, since he's more of a playmaker and we need someone who's more of a goal scorer. But we could always run Buch-Thomas-Kyrou and then Holloway-Dvo-Marner.

Either way, I don't think he'd really come here, but if we do make the playoffs this season, and have any sort of success, we have a really clean balance sheet and a pretty enticing group of up-and-coming young players that could be part of a championship core.

I'd say it's still a little early, it would have been perfect if Marner was available in the 2026 off-season, b/c at that point I think we'll have more clarity on Snuggy/Dvo/Bolduc, but guys of Marner's caliber come along so rarely in UFA that if we really do have a chance to go for him we'd need to be seriously considering it - Broberg/Holloway knocked a full year off our retool timeline, Marner would probably move up our contending timeline by another full year.
Marner doesn't strike me as a guy who wants to move to St. Louis, MO.

Since it’s silly season anyway:

I write code for work. I can have a monitor play hockey stuff all day. Toronto puts out tons of content. I’ve sat thru a lot of it half paying attention.

The number of times Marner answers St. Louis to random questions, or that for whatever reason we come up in his Toronto based content is weird.

Example: they just put a goal horn identify quiz show video out. All the players are like idk any of them. Marner says something like “was just thinking about st Louis’”.

It’s a fun watch and the Marner part is about a minute in. Its obviously nothing but It’s just weird after it’s happened a few times.

I agree. VERY risk-averse, doesn't want to put the franchise is a spot where they don't have the flexibility to get rid of a bad move. Lehtera could be moved, Krug was almost moved, Faulk can be moved, but if a star at 14-mil starts playing like a 7-mil guy, good luck trying to move that.

And while I think Rantanen and Marner are elite guys who don't have much risk of dropping off, I just don't think the way we build teams makes them that much of an option nor do I think top guys are pushing their way to STL the way everything is right now. We're a franchise in flux.

i dont want marner on my club. he was awful and a total ghost in the 4 nations tourny. cant play big boy hockey, we have enough of those types on our roster

Dave Pangotta: “I hope so it will certainly spice things up to that extent. I think it’s still early for that type of a shocker to kind of be be revealed. One team I am curious about, and this wouldn’t result in the same type of deal that Vegas ended up making, but primarily futures, was futures, this would be a bigger blockbuster asset-type deal.

There’s a lot of noise around, and has been for the last month around St. Louis. And while a lot of attention has been placed on Brayden Schenn, Jordan Kyrou is a player that his name has been floating around for a little while. And if St. Louis does something big and bold, not a future-type deal, but an old school Star-for Star type swap.

I wouldn’t be shocked if Jordan Kyrou’s out there or ends up being a player that one of those, one of those big pieces that then gets moving for another big piece. Not sure what direction they’re going to go in, and they don’t have to. He’s got term. He’s got his no-trade that kicks in July 1st, so they can even wait until the summertime or the draft before making a big deal. But he’s a very curious name that I’m looking at.

The others are out of Buffalo, the usual suspects with (Dylan) Cozens and (Bowen) Byram that they continue to listen on. Teams have been poking around on (Alex) Tuch. There’s a lot of reluctance to do that. But the other curious name is Owen Power, and he’s got his long-term deal. He doesn’t have any no-trade protection. That kicks in for a few years because of his age.

NHL Rumors: Montreal Canadiens, Toronto Maple Leafs, and the Vancouver Canucks

But from my understanding that the Sabers haven’t told teams they’re not willing to at least take calls on. (Rasmus) Dahlin forget about it. Tage Thompson, no chance. Tuch you’re going to have to pay a ridiculous premium again to get him. But Cozens and Byram have been out there. My understanding is that Owen Power, they’ll listen on. But this is another star-for-start type of deal if it ends up happening.

Armstrong could really do some wheeling and dealing if he wanted to. Seems like crazy season right now, likely alot to do with the cap going up.

And there are rumors that Peterka is available, with Rangers being involved in those discussions. Very curious what Buffalo's plan is, or if they even have a plan.

Does make me wonder if Blues and Sabres are looking at a swap chairs type move of Kyrou+(+) for Power/Byram+Peterka.

So Nelson (pending UFA, same age as Schenn) gets the equivalent of two 1sts, which is reportedly what DA is demanding for Schenn. I think he can get it. Probably from Toronto in the form of a 1st and Cowan or Minten.
