2024-2025 Blues Trade Proposals Thread.

Any shot Parayko could be dealt with Schenn rumoured to be on the block? Or is that a non-starter

Jets should be willing to part with multiple firsts and a top prospect if he'd waive

I agree. I don’t see us retaining, unless it’s something less than the normal 50% or a 3rd team is involved. For example, if we maintained approximately 25%, then his cap hit to the Leafs would be $5.0m. Then, you take back a contract or two.

Something like Schenn (25% along with maybe more if 3rd team involved), & Dean for Minten, 2026 1st, and Max Domi to balance the money.

That’s only an example, but it’s how something would have to be structured for a cap strapped team like the Leafs and the return is palatable for a team in win now mode.

If you are locking up a retention slot for 3 years why not maximize the return for doing so?
I don’t see how 1.625 million retained vs 3.25 mil retained will make a difference in us not being able to sign our RFAs in two years when they come up. With the cap finally rising it shouldn’t be a problem at all and we have so many prospect coming up that filling spots with rookies on ELC is going to continue to happen. Lots of dead weight on the roster right now will also be gone. I don’t see how Schenn is moved without retention don’t think the value is there in that case.

With the rising cap, Schenn is a perfectly reasonable 3C while we have a bunch of other guys on ELCs. He's probably going to be our 2C next year, and potentially the year after that, but then slide down to 3C the year after, when we are (hopefully) getting serious about making runs towards the Cup.

I think we had a 3 year plan for our retool when it became clear in 2022-2023 that the wheels were falling off. That season was NOT year 1 of the plan. Last year was year 1 of the plan, we are currently in year 2. Next year would be year 3, and probably another playoff miss, except I think that getting Broberg and Holloway for what we got them for shaved about a year off, and now that we've traded for Fowler, who's been a direct upgrade over Leddy, I think we should start pushing for playoffs as early as next year.

If we trade Schenn, we better be sure we can pick up a guy who can be our 2C for next year and possibly the year after, doesn't matter if it's by trade or UFA or whatever, but expecting Dvo to come in as a rookie or even a sophomore and lock down the 2C spot is setting us up for expectations failure.

Put it on a t-shirt: more d**ks, less p**sies!

I agree with the sentiment of your post. It's not always easy to acquire those types of players but it should be the goal at least. We shouldn't underestimate having a guy like O'Reilly on the team, both on and off the ice. He seems like the kind of guy who not only leads by example but will push guys off the ice to become better pros.

I'm not sure Schenn has that kind of personality, but I also don't think Thomas, Kyrou or Parayko have it either. You need guys that HATE to lose and can infect teammates with that same drive. Neighbours and Holloway may have that personality type but they aren't really experienced enough to be a team leader yet. If everyone played with the same edge that Walker does, I wonder what our record would be.

I'd love it if everyone played like Walker. 5 goals, 4 assists and -3 x 18 skaters. Forget a top 5 pick. That would be a guaranteed top 3. We would not win a single game.

Nobody (very few) complained about losing O'Reilly when he left. But now that we suck, he was retroactively "tough to play against" and the team we have isn't. "Tough to play against" just like "having heart" is a bullshit phrase people pull out to explain it when we are bad. But they can't analyze it beforehand. it is only used retroactively. We suck, hence are players aren't hard to play against. But nobody complained about that when we drafted/signed/traded for them.

We are currently in a pattern of waiting for contracts to run off the books/kids to develop.

I’m not sure a 3C fills the issue we would have going in to next season. I’m worried with the cap increase the UFA market is going to look very silly-esp at center given how many teams have a real need at center in the middle 6.

I also don’t think we are an attractive option for someone to sign with right now that would fit the bill.

I think we’re going to have to offer too much term and too much money to stop gap the hole that we’d open up.
It sounds like you have an invested some time into researching the market. Is there a player or players that might be interested in short term deal to prove they are worth more?

Also, this is a time where not trading for Hayes then trading him would have been beneficial. We either would have more assets to find a plug in player or we would have Hayes to fill a gap. I realize he wasn’t ideal, but we have so few forwards developing at a stage where I would be worried about ruining their development. Then again I never would have went after him in the first place. We rushed into trying to be competitive. We needed more assets to reload and build, but here we are.

We all have different opinions, which is great. I have no clue what the best style is. I personally liked our cup teams style. We physically manhandled the Sharks and Bruins in the playoffs.

So you’re saying instead of having a team identity we should just find another McDavid? Got it
no, I am saying I would rather have a Zach Benson than Toropchenko

and having a team identity of running into people and hoping you win isn’t any different than hoping to be gifted a McDavid type

We all have our opinions, but I think the Hayes trade was reactionary from Army, after the rumored Krug for Sanheim deal fell through. I don't remember the full details, but the primary pieces were Krug for Sanheim and I think the Blues would also take Hayes off their hands with some retention. When that all fell through, we still went through with Hayes. He scored his 30 points for us, just like he did 2 of his 4 seasons with Philly, but we only had to pay him half his salary, and it only cost a 6th rounder. He would have still been more solid this season than Sunny from a production standpoint. The problem came in when we had to waste a 2nd rounder to get PIT to take him, which hurt. In hindsight, it wasn't a terrible trade as a stopgap like you mentioned. The horrible part was the paying to send him away, for no reason. He could have played there his year without "blocking" any prospects.

What would you guys say to:

Tkachuk+Norris for Thomas+Kyrou

How good is Kyrou defensively?

There's nothing wrong with our pair, in fact Norris could have a Hischier and higher arc but just change of scenery as we are moving towards puck-possession and defensive hockey under Green.

I want absolutely nothing to do with Explodey shoulder. And I am not trading Thomas.

Kyrou's defensive game has made strong progression this year but it's definitely not his strongest skill.

@ReginKarlssonLehner Going further into that deal. While I would love to have Tkachuk on the team, I would prefer not to include Kyrou, and even if It was a Kyrou for Tkachuk Deal I can't bring myself to want to add what it would take to Kyrou to get him for the production difference between the two players.

Other posters would probably jump at a Kyrou++ for Brady, but for me personally I just can't find the justification to add a 1st+ to Kyrou for similar/slightly increased production.

People have been talking about being harder to play against. Getting Brady would be as good start but obviously it depends on what the + is

Probably not. I think it was Johnston's report that seemed to indicate that we'd have more available than we were expecting, and he mentioned Faulk and possibly Parayko. I really doubt Parayko, but I suppose if a high enough offer is made, Army might consider it.

Big no thank you. B Tkachuk is one of the most overrated players in the league.

Thomas >> Tkachuk
Kyrou >> Norris

I think Blues would do it if you replaced Norris with Stutzle.

Part of what makes a team hard to play against is TOP. A lot of the physicality we remember in 2019 happened in the OZ to extend shifts. All 4 lines were capable of generating TOP and chances. We’re lucky if we have 2 lines generating TOP on a given night.

Our bottom 6 is has been utterly atrocious - it needs completely reconstructed.

It doesn’t absolve the top-6, but it’s pretty damn difficult to generate momentum line to line, and get the zone starts you want, when 2 of your lines are getting caved to oblivion on a “good” night.

We lack skill. We just don’t have enough guys capable of making plays. Physicality when controlling the puck is so much more impactful than physicality in the defensive zone.

Kyrou for Tkachuk can be the entry point in a deal. It would take more to get him since they know hes a STL kid. But in this case, I wouldnt mind overpaying just to get rid of Kyrou alone. Getting a STL kid who will pump up even bigger numbers here and knows what the Bluenote is all about is just icing on the cake.

Quite frankly, I am tired of the mercenary like attitude that our roster has had for years. Half of them don't care about the Bluenote at all, just here for the paycheck. People like Schenn, Buch, Leddy, Krug, Kyrou, Faulk come to mind.

I want Tkachuk on my team. I want Sundqvist types on my team. I want Perron types on my team. I want Trent Fredericks on my team. I want Binner on my team. I want Parayko on my team.

If you don't care about what it means to play for the Bluenote and the history here then GTFO.

Ah we're back to this old standby. Brady is a slightly better player then Kyrou in a vacuum. Kyrou's contract, however, makes him the far FAR more valuable player. Brady's contract is up the season AFTER the cap jumps up to 113.5M - so let's conservatively estimate 115M for the 2028-2029 season (It will almost certainly be higher unless another global catastrophe occurs). He'll be 29 at puck drop on opening night of the first year of what will inevitably be an 8 year deal. 13% (Which is below what Mac/Drai/Makar etc are getting atm) of the cap at that point is just under 15 million, so let's go ahead and pencil him in for 15 million.

Our window looks like this if everything goes well:

Next year, make the playoffs as a wildcard, while acclimating Dvo and Snuggy to the NHL, as well as witnessing continued growth from Neighbors and Bolduc.

The year after that, win at least A round, while seeing the aformentioned foursome cement themselves as core pieces in the top 6/9. Stenberg and Lindstein are late season callups and look solid in limited action, possibly getting a small role on the playoff squad. Hofer takes over as the playoff starter from Binny and shines.

The year after that (27-28) is when we find out if we have a potential championship group. We should make a serious push towards the top of the NHL standings, as well as a deep playoff run. Jiricek makes his debut and shines. Hofer shows he's a true number one starter. All our young players continue to level up, and one or two of our later round picks unexpectantly pops. Perhaps our top 10 pick from this year (25-26) hits the ground running and really cements our team as deep and dangerous.

At no point in this timeline does Brady Tkachuk instead of Jordan Kyrou push the needle forward enough to change anything. And -right- as we're ready to start making some decisions on who to build around (Do we stick with the Parayko/Buch/Kyrou(Brady)/Thomas core or do we start selling on some of those guys and swapping towards a Thomas/Neighbors/Bolduc/Snuggy/Dvo/Stenberg core) we are going to have to pay Brady 15M on an eight year extension. Kyrou, on the other hand, will have three years remaining at 8.125M, which is 7% of a 115M cap. Assuming they both play at their current level, Kyrou will provide far more value either in production vs. cap or as a huge trade piece for us to dangle to fill our most significant hole, whatever that may be (Spoiler, it's a RHD) right when our window seriously opens.

Brady for Kyrou is dumb. Brady as a UFA when his current contract expires - now that makes sense, so long as we have the cap space and need.
