Any shot Parayko could be dealt with Schenn rumoured to be on the block? Or is that a non-starter

Jets should be willing to part with multiple firsts and a top prospect if he'd waive

What is the price everyone would be comfortable paying for Dobson? Whats the biggest piece people are willing to send out?
I’m not really comfortable sending any huge piece unless I’m certain that we could sign him for a reasonable price long term

I agree. I don’t see us retaining, unless it’s something less than the normal 50% or a 3rd team is involved. For example, if we maintained approximately 25%, then his cap hit to the Leafs would be $5.0m. Then, you take back a contract or two.

Something like Schenn (25% along with maybe more if 3rd team involved), & Dean for Minten, 2026 1st, and Max Domi to balance the money.

That’s only an example, but it’s how something would have to be structured for a cap strapped team like the Leafs and the return is palatable for a team in win now mode.

If you are locking up a retention slot for 3 years why not maximize the return for doing so?
I don’t see how 1.625 million retained vs 3.25 mil retained will make a difference in us not being able to sign our RFAs in two years when they come up. With the cap finally rising it shouldn’t be a problem at all and we have so many prospect coming up that filling spots with rookies on ELC is going to continue to happen. Lots of dead weight on the roster right now will also be gone. I don’t see how Schenn is moved without retention don’t think the value is there in that case.

With the rising cap, Schenn is a perfectly reasonable 3C while we have a bunch of other guys on ELCs. He's probably going to be our 2C next year, and potentially the year after that, but then slide down to 3C the year after, when we are (hopefully) getting serious about making runs towards the Cup.

I think we had a 3 year plan for our retool when it became clear in 2022-2023 that the wheels were falling off. That season was NOT year 1 of the plan. Last year was year 1 of the plan, we are currently in year 2. Next year would be year 3, and probably another playoff miss, except I think that getting Broberg and Holloway for what we got them for shaved about a year off, and now that we've traded for Fowler, who's been a direct upgrade over Leddy, I think we should start pushing for playoffs as early as next year.

If we trade Schenn, we better be sure we can pick up a guy who can be our 2C for next year and possibly the year after, doesn't matter if it's by trade or UFA or whatever, but expecting Dvo to come in as a rookie or even a sophomore and lock down the 2C spot is setting us up for expectations failure.

Put it on a t-shirt: more d**ks, less p**sies!

I agree with the sentiment of your post. It's not always easy to acquire those types of players but it should be the goal at least. We shouldn't underestimate having a guy like O'Reilly on the team, both on and off the ice. He seems like the kind of guy who not only leads by example but will push guys off the ice to become better pros.

I'm not sure Schenn has that kind of personality, but I also don't think Thomas, Kyrou or Parayko have it either. You need guys that HATE to lose and can infect teammates with that same drive. Neighbours and Holloway may have that personality type but they aren't really experienced enough to be a team leader yet. If everyone played with the same edge that Walker does, I wonder what our record would be.

I'd love it if everyone played like Walker. 5 goals, 4 assists and -3 x 18 skaters. Forget a top 5 pick. That would be a guaranteed top 3. We would not win a single game.

Nobody (very few) complained about losing O'Reilly when he left. But now that we suck, he was retroactively "tough to play against" and the team we have isn't. "Tough to play against" just like "having heart" is a bullshit phrase people pull out to explain it when we are bad. But they can't analyze it beforehand. it is only used retroactively. We suck, hence are players aren't hard to play against. But nobody complained about that when we drafted/signed/traded for them.

We are currently in a pattern of waiting for contracts to run off the books/kids to develop.

I’m not sure a 3C fills the issue we would have going in to next season. I’m worried with the cap increase the UFA market is going to look very silly-esp at center given how many teams have a real need at center in the middle 6.

I also don’t think we are an attractive option for someone to sign with right now that would fit the bill.

I think we’re going to have to offer too much term and too much money to stop gap the hole that we’d open up.
It sounds like you have an invested some time into researching the market. Is there a player or players that might be interested in short term deal to prove they are worth more?

Also, this is a time where not trading for Hayes then trading him would have been beneficial. We either would have more assets to find a plug in player or we would have Hayes to fill a gap. I realize he wasn’t ideal, but we have so few forwards developing at a stage where I would be worried about ruining their development. Then again I never would have went after him in the first place. We rushed into trying to be competitive. We needed more assets to reload and build, but here we are.

We all have different opinions, which is great. I have no clue what the best style is. I personally liked our cup teams style. We physically manhandled the Sharks and Bruins in the playoffs.
