Saad will definitely pull a 2nd+. There's lots to like about him to a Cup contending team. Leddy's return really depends on the trading partners need and desperation.

I think Leddy would as well, teams love old guys, who are still good, on short term for a playoff run

Goalies don't go for that much. I do think his performance last season helps, where people this season will give him the benefit of the doubt. I'd look at what Calgary got for Markstrom as an example. A 1st and something equivalent to more of a B prospect or a young NHL player. I would not expect an equivalent of 1st + Dvorksky/Snuggerud.

I'd trade Binner for that package in a heartbeat, but I just don't see it. The Cup does count for something (and is a massive driver of his value), but it is also from more than 5 years ago and he carries a sizeable financial commitment. A 1st and a Grade A prospect is a rare package for anyone and I can't recall a goalie ever returning that in the cap era.

Personally, my preference would be to seek a grade A prospect with an understanding that landing such an asset means we're not receiving much (if any) draft capital. I'd be totally fine getting "only" a guy that projects as a potential top-of-the-lineup player.

My absolute dream would be to pry Nikishin from Carolina. I'd retain on Binner to get that done. I'd take back either of their goalies to get that done. I'd happily add in another bottom/middle of the lineup rental if there is such a guy on our roster that they think fits their system to get that done. I don't think it is realistic, but I'd much rather try to get one potential legit difference maker than a later 1st and a good (but not great) prospect.

Edit: All that said, the article starting this conversation is pretty damn speculative. A random scout and a former Blues employee who now works elsewhere speculating about Binner potentially asking for a trade is quite different than a report that he is actually being shopped.

the quotes about him wanting the Cup again after tasting it are very accurate. he has to be frustrated not getting a playoff shot. I am more than happy to see him retire a Blue but really once he gets the record I am kind of expecting it. The reason is that teams around the league with contenders and shitty goaltending are too desperate not to make an offer we have to take. But it has to be an offer we have to take. Like a late first is not something we HAVE to take. An A prospect might be. It has to be a piece we know we can build around. The response could be, goalies don't fetch that. But if even one contender can see the gamer that we see in Binnington they might be willing to pay it. He is a known quantity in a sea of guesswork at that position and there are a lot of have-nots

Colorado
Carolina
Edmonton

I would love to see him take Rod Brind'Amour's team over the hump. I was just thinking about who I might want back from that team. Maybe a Jackson Blake? I'm not in love with it since he's a smaller winger but that is the sort of A prospect I am talking about. He's not a blue chipper we aren't getting that. But Blake is likely to be a solid NHL player and would be a piece for a build. I have not spent any time thinking about who specifically I want to get in return for Binnington because I don't want Armstrong to trade him.

I don't know how Colorado would make it work as they are in cap hell and aren't exactly flush with futures assets.

Let's assume that they would send us Georgiev in the deal to help make the cap work. We would still need to retain about $600k for them to fit Binner under the cap. Additionally, adding a $5M+ goalie beyond this season would also make it even harder to re-sign Rantanen and all of this is made more complicated with the uncertainty around Landeskog.

I think we would have to retain significant salary to make it work for them and I don't think that they have the assets for us to be willing to do that. They don't have this year's 1st round pick and their prospect pool isn't great. They have a couple good prospects, but no one so good that entice me to retain salary on Binner.

I think Blake is edging more towards the Blue chip than the A grade prospect at this point. He’s already in the NHL and he’s productive in limited minutes.

I think Bradley Nadeau would be the more realistic of the two that Carolina would move. Although, honestly I can’t see a world where they’d trade either and a 2nd for Binnington.

This is exactly why I don't see Binnington moved this year. I'm not advocating moving him - just addressing the voices here looking at exploring trading him after that article. Your comment I quoted allowed for a reasonable segue way to address that train of thought.

I think we missed the perfect opportunity to move him last year when there were a few more buyers - particularly Edmonton, who due to sour grapes now I don't expect to be take/make calls to DA in the next few years.

There's not many goalies available that would appear to be upgrades either, so at least that's in our favour - guys like Varlamov, Lindgren, Talbot, Gibson, UPL and/or Lankinen (after Demko shows he's healthy) all carry lesser track records, age concerns or haven't shown well recently.

UPL being the most questionable in terms of availability - but I suspect there's growing pressure in Buffalo, so trading someone there might gain traction to mentor and platoon with Levi while acquiring UPL as a long term solution for a team with question marks in net.

Personally I'd be trying to figure out a way to snag Nikishin rather than the picks.

That said, it's much more likely Carolina moves the picks than a 23 year old Nikishin (under KHL contract until the end of the 2025-26 Russian season - speculated to be coming over after the KHL season ends this spring). Nikishin won the KHL MVP and best dman award last year and is averaging 25 mins a night this year since returning from injury per Dobber prospects.

Nikishin is a left shot dman, which doesn't help our deficit of RHD prospects - but I can see him and Broberg anchoring our 1/2 LD spots for the next decade+ and he should be stepping into the NHL inside the next 2 years while being an impact player in under 4 years. 6'4, mobile and physical with a pretty damn impressive offensive record for 2022-23 (65gp 11-44-55p at 21) and 2023-24 (67gp 17-39-56p at 22).

I know it's been discussed before, but I think Nikishin is about the best fit we could ask for in terms of meshing with our next core and timeline - there's potential he is that 1D we're looking for.

Next year try to ease Nikishin in initially, then move him up to play with Parayko to cover for his mistakes unless the Broberg Parayko pairing is a perfect fit.

I'd offer Leddy (4m 2026 UFA) and Binner (3.6m w/ 40% retention 2027 UFA) for Andersen (3.4m pending UFA) Nikishin, Burns (5.28m pending UFA), a 2025 1st and 2026 2nd.

That's defensive depth for this year, an Orlov replacement for next year while not losing Orlov for this year's playoffs. They move out 7.68m and take in 7.6m - we get Nikishin in next year or the year after on a 2 year ELC to make up for the Binnington retention years.

Ideally, we retain less on Binner, but Carolina needs to have high retention to make it work. I don't see them downgrading from Orlov to Leddy in order to make it work without retaining on Binnington where they'd move out 13.03m and take back 10m.
