I love it when people claim shit like "mcdavid was just sending a message to the league"

No he f***ing wasnt. He got angry and did something stupid. It's not like he was in the middle of the melee and thought "you know what, this is silly, this has to stop in the league, but the refs and the NHL are not doing anything about it, so I as the face of the league need to show them it has to stop. What could I do to make them realize it has to stop? Should I fight? Should I push back? Should I punch the guy? I think the best course of action is a cross check to the face that should get noticed by the league to affect real change"

If he did do it to send a message then it's premeditated and should be a heftier suspension.

Let's not be idiots to satisfy our biases. He did a stupid thing and received a rightful punishment for it.

I agree with the punishment but I also find it laughable that McDavid is 197th in penalties drawn in the league.

Best players in the NBA get the foul calls. Best players in the NFL get the penalty calls. Best players in the NHL?

Lol. Play through it you bum.

For me the sport gets to be a lot less fun when we're looking up stats like this. I am sure the guys drawing the most penalties are the guys who also take a lot of penalties and who play a hard style and/or get in the dirty areas by the net. I don't know how many players there are in the NHL who qualify for this list nor what the criteria are, but it seems like there's got to be some nuance missing for him to be 197th, because that seems silly in a vaccum.

Outside of the stat realm, in sports where contact is allowed, the big strong guys can also get fouled and it doesn't look like when other athletes do. Foppa is a great example, but in hoops guys like Shaq and LeBron can get hacked and power through it in a way that makes some calls harder.

Anyway I have never liked the Oilers and I don't really like McDavid and the agonized tears from their fans is like viagra for me.

Since the 2021-2022 season, McDavid is 1st overall in penelties drawn. Seems like thsi year is more of an outlier than anything.

For McDavid, Myers or any fans that want to whine about it this is my stance.

At the end of the day neither were really justified IMO. Mack and Makar get mugged every game, they also draw a good number of penalties. While i'd argue not enough, I don't think it justifies trying to rattle someone in the head.

Drai's take, Perry's take, and alot of Oilers fans takes fall flat to me. Just because you are the best player in the league, world or w/e... You're simply flinging a vulcanized rubber disk around into a mesh netting for a living. Taking a carbon fiber stick to someones head is assault in the real world. You deserve to sit if you can't avoid assault as a way to handle yourself.

Funny people cry about protecting the stars but what Mahomes got away with last week made the NFL a clownshow.
I mean, the NFL is willing the Chiefs to nearly every win this year. I still think people that are hockey fans need to really go over and look and see who is drawing penalties and re-evaluate this whole "protecting the stars" argument.

I'd be curious to dig into this more. I don't watch Edmonton often enough to know. But just because he's the best player in the world it doesn't seem to me that that should or would correlate to the most penalties drawn. Maybe he tries to stay on his feet more and doesn't flop. Maybe he's better at avoiding contact that would result in a called penalty. It doesn't make sense that the league would target McDavid personally.

I looked at the stats myself, and it seems like a really weird stat to quote. Rempe tops the league? Greer, MacDermid, Givani Smith are in the top 10.

Draisaitl is 129th. MacKinnon 257th.

Edit:

Looking at penalties drawn since 2015 season looks more reasonable.

Doesn't seem like he's getting mistreated at all.

Stop it, the NHL clearly has it out for him because he played for a Canadian team and I won't accept otherwise
