2024/2025 Around the League

What was the deal with him? I can't remember why he got ran out of town, but I did enjoy him in that series against San Jose
He wanted to be paid what he was worth and wanted security in I think 4 or 5+ years length of contract.

The Avs wanted him to sign him for cheap.

Same shit as happened to ROR.

If you go back and look at all the starts, stops and stutters of our rebuild...I'm beginning to think management was the biggest contributer to how long it took.

I'm not sure Varly got shit on. I think people gave up on him due to, as you said, his health. I don't think anyone said or believed he sucked though, it was just that "IT" sucked he couldn't stay healthy and thus be relied upon.

For me, I always viewed him the same way I viewed Frankie. I don't blame them for not having good health, but the fact that they didn't, hurt the Avs. Still, they both gave everything they had while playing for us and I'm not sure how anyone can't be satisfied with that.

For Starters, Varly is currently ranked #2 on my all-time Avs list behind Roy:
Roy > Varly > Darcy > Theo > Anderson > not going any further¹

Backups go:
Budaj² > Frankie² > Giggy² > Abby > Hamburgler > not going any further¹

¹No way in hell I'm ready to insert Blackwood or Wedgewood into these categories yet... but signs are promissing they will be pushing people down and out.

²Budaj vs GIggy vs Frankie is something I haven't really thought out in my mind. I think "my" two top spots for backups are Peter and Pavel , althouh not putting Giggy in there is so damn hard. Anyways my thoughts... Budaj played 242 games for us and was always an ultimate team and locker-room guy. Frankie, also a complete team guy who also just happened to sweep the Connor McDavid-Leon Draisaitl led Edmonton Oilers in the playoffs after our starter was injured. Giggy though... I think his voice inside the locker-room probably means more for the legacy of the organization this his performance on the ice... which was also admirable.

Definitely did. I know because I would say the same thing at the time, that health is his only problem, he plays well when he's healthy, but I was told this wasn't true. He just wasn't that good.

Then stats from when he was playing injured were brought up to support this, and it was suggested that Pickard was a better goalie, and should be protected in expansion instead of him. Then Picks spent the next 6-7 years in the AHL and Varly continued to play well.

I like your starters list. For backups just in terms of how they played, I think I'd go Aebi>JSG>Budaj>Frankie>Pickard. The latter four pretty close.

It's been a while, but I remember Aebischer being quite a good backup. Good enough that we were all willing to give him a shot at #1 on a contender.

I don't know how the league still profits from the expense needed for these.

I haven't given a shit about an outdoor game in many years, except when the Avs played, and I watched it on TV just like I would a normal game.

I think I might even watch ASG stuff more than the outdoor games, and I never watch any of that either.
Stadium games have a lot bigger seating capacity, and thus more tickets sold (and probably at a higher price). LoanDepot Park has almost double the capacity of Sunrise Center, so that's a lot more gate revenue. That plus the extra ratings for a big event like that would probably cover the costs handily.

I think the Winter Classic being a dud this year has more to do with just picking a really bad pair of teams. Nobody is excited to see a bottom feeder square off against a bubble team. The Panthers are a top team in the league that just won a Cup, so that earns a lot more attention. And even though it looks like the Rangers are spiraling out, they looked like a heavyweight at the start of the season when the matchup was likely in the final planning stages.

If we’re including management’s drafting, I fully agree.

I can see Miller working in Boston.... At least for a while. Petey does not seem like a typical Boston player to me.
Oh god no... I'm hoping they are trying to land them BOTH as a package.

Both in Boston...only thing better would be to put both in Phily but they are actually trying to get something good building there.

How DARE Crosby tie Sakic for points in a career!!!
I mean, the difference in how much they love hockey is striking.

Crosby is still trying... and he plays for the Penguins in 2025.

Sakic signed an RFA offer sheet to try and escape Colorado. Never really wanting to be in Colorado but faced with foregoing a paycheck later in his career, Joe decided not to retire and signed on with the Avs for one more year in 2008/09. By November Joe realized he didn't have the heart to continue to play for the shit-show the Avs had become and got a "back injury", probably caused by being to cheap to pay neigborhood kids to shovel his driveway. On the verge of returning to the lineup in late December, Joe went out and conciously stuck his hand in a snowblower to ensure he didn't have to suit up for the Avs again. "I've never seen anything like it. We were almost done shoveling the entire driveway and he came running out of the garage with a snowblower. Fired it up, yelled something about clouds and stuck his hand right into the auger" exlaimed one of them young men who had been paid by the Avalanche to shovel Joe's driveway for the remainder of the season.:sarcasm:

Coach. Unless its GMJK
I will give credit for the new GM for hiring a good coach, something Kekäläinen failed to do after Tortorella.

Ottawa is a bad team
I saw that....

And Ottawa was actually pretty good until Ullmark got injured. That has a massive effect on a team. We of all people should know. Switch Blackwood back to Georgiev, how are we doing?

meanwhile, in NJ...

If anyone watched the Rangers Devils game or highlights from yesterday, holy shit was Jack Hughes bad in the OT. He kept turning the puck over and getting bailed out by Markstrom until the last turn over of his which led to a 2 on 1 and Rangers goal
