It’s actually a shame that he didn’t turn into an overpowering defensive presence, because that guy in the second picture obliterating forwards would make so much sense

Siemens was actually a good skater for his size, and was by all accounts a really great locker room presence everywhere he went. His problem was just that he had flat zero puck skills. Even as a shutdown defenseman, you need to be able to make a basic breakout pass from your zone, and it says a lot that Anton Lindholm handled the puck with more alacrity at the NHL level.

Interesting to see that regardless of whether he's a better or worse GM than Dubas, Brad Treliving might have done the one thing his predecessor never quite did in Toronto--he got the goaltending right. At least for now.
