Toronto is only attractive if you grew up in Ontario. It's just that a lot of players grew up in Ontario.

You won't find a lot of players from the US, Europe, or other provinces like QC, BC or AB that dream of playing for the Leafs.

The real attractive markets are Vegas, Florida, Tampa, NYR.
There was a time when Florida was a no-go for a lot of players. They were totally irrelevant, even in the days they had a still-productive Pavel Bure. Goes to show you what a GM who doesn't suck can do to turn your fortunes around.

IMO, Tampa was like that too.

Sure. Of the 768 players who have played in the NHL this year, 144 are from Ontario. It's fair to put Toronto up there as a desirable market, because of that volume alone.

Now here's the caveat: a lot of that is old farts who want to play there 1 or two last seasons of their career in blue and white. Not that many players like Tavares who want to join the Leafs in their prime, and stick around. Domi I guess too. With other top markets, it's a lot more about playing their prime years there.

Like I wouldn't be surprised if Stamkos eventually played for the Leafs. But he didn't want to leave Tampa in his prime.
