You can take mins played , a # 1 will play the most. You want your best players on the ice the most. Especially the most important position which is D

Hard concept I know

5 ? There are all kinds doing it. If your not good enough to play the pp you cannot be considered a #1
Really? Give us a list.

A true #1 doesn’t always have to be the team’s best puckmover. They also don’t have to be the team’s best defensive PK guy.

You’re the one with the galaxy brain takes on this board, we’re simply trying to apply logic where none exists.

There is a difference between top pairing and a true #1

Oh so they don't kill every penalty? So they're only playing half the special teams?

Gotcha. Must not be a true #1C.
shot blockers and workers play forward but your #1 D should be able to kill penalties. They all do. A defenseman impacts the game overall much more than a forward. All day long.

Lol. No, that's simply not true for all points you made.

1C > 1D. This has been shown time after time throughout history.

Byram isn't a #1 right now and doesn't show signs of it. When he YOLOs, he can put up points, but ends up abysmal defensively and actually a net negative. When he focuses on defense, he has almost no offensive impact. He hasn't found a balance, and at his age, he's pretty unlikely to do so. Hist best case money wise is to try to be Montour. A YOLO offensive guy who you try to hide in the lineup.

Self awareness... when you don't produce offense and you bleed chances (regardless if they go in or not), coaches tend to hate that. Don't mind him being upset by it, but as a NHLer, he should be seeking out the why and work to improve. To reach the ceiling that people thought he had (including myself), he has to seek out his weakness and work to improve them. This shows a pure lack of self awareness to do so.

What'd he do/say? Coaches need a better union I guess
He complained about the officiating. I'm pretty sure he had a legit beef, but the NHL will always, always crack down hard on any sort of criticism of the refs.

If there ever was a Coach's Union, I am 100000000000000% convinced they'd have Mike Babcock run it. And he'd absolutely go full Alan Eagleson in the role.

The hit on their MacK was the kind that an organization would be very upset by (should have been a penalty, but not as egregious as they'd say), but from there emotions got the best of them.
