Not sure in Canada specifically but kids don’t learn how to hit until pretty late these days. Better for their longterm health but makes the bigger kids more of projects in that area. I think Martone will be that guy eventually, just might take time.

OT .... Back in the day, many talented teens quit the game because they were often thrust into a violent situation of players bigger, and more often than not, older. After bantam the age limits were right up to 18 years old. There were plenty of thugs who would never amount to anything on the ice.

Yup, not that I was talented per se, but I shattered my ankle in half on a stupid play by a 'thug' who literally just wanted to hurt me. I wasn't very big at the time, playing against almost full grown men at the age of 15. I didn't play competitive hockey after that, not worth getting injured.

Just IMO - but it's the definition of hubris to make a very specific definition of an 18YO kid NHL potential. In all honesty - there is very little predictability on their future.

I'm happy that the Hawks have a deep pipeline because a number of the guys we're all excited for will absolutely bomb, and hopefully there are guys who dropped in the ranking that figure it out and end up being legit NHL'ers.

Not sure what you meant about Nazar, your wording confused me a bit. If I’m reading it right you don’t think Nazar has shown anything that makes you believe he’s a first line player. If that’s true I’m wondering what you’re seeing that I’m missing? I’ve watched all the Icehogs games so far and for me he’s put to rest all the reservations I’ve had about him. I know It’s early but I believe we’ve found the perfect winger for Bedard next season. Just need some size for his other wing. Martone? McQueen? Hell, even Misa?

True story. I played house league for a year because I needed a break from pee-wee travel check as a 14 year old.

When I played, I don’t recall any checking age limit. Personally, I think hockey went the wrong direction by moving the checking age to Bantam rather than down to Mites.

Bantam has a huge spread of physical maturity between the boys, with large weight and height differences. Coupled with not learning to keep heads up because of no checking at younger age, it’s a recipe for head and body injuries.

Let them learn about checking when they’re all small and light of weight, and learn to keep their heads up. The collisions are nonviolent in comparison with older age groups.

People seem to think a player needs to flirt with a PPG in the NHL to be a top 6 forward when that just isn't the case.

Or maybe when they say "top 6" they really mean 1st line forward? Its the number 1 dman thing all over again lol.

Not that I'd be in the habit of defending the posts of @Blackhawkswincup but I'm missing the "absolute" parts in his post.

Now if you're talking Musto or JustinFields/KrisBryantisbest, that's another story.

There is a ton of research out there that completely negates this argument. While it is true that the younger the kids are, the less variety in their size/maturity, you are just exposing them to checking for a much longer period of time which will lead to more injuries.

There is a ton of research out there that completely negates this argument. While it is true that the younger the kids are, the less variety in their size/maturity, you are just exposing them to checking for a much longer period of time which will lead to more injuries.

It is an interesting debate. When there was no limitation to body checking by age, in my experience, body checking was quite rare prior to the peewee age anyway. I think it is a good idea to ban body checking at a young age but I also believe it is the responsibility of coaches to preach protecting oneself at all times ... even though body checking is against the rules it doesn't mean another player won't take a run at you. Back then, we were on our own to learn to protect oneself just to survive. it is a vastly different game now.... for the better.

Was at the North Dakota Miami Friday game in Oxford a couple hours ago. Thoughts on Boisvert:

Boisvert has a lethal shot that he probably doesn't use enough. Solid passer, but he's got an NHL shot that strikes fear into the opponent when UND has the puck in the offensive zone. Nice pass on UND's first goal for an assist, and scored the GWG with 23 seconds left with a nice snipe from fairly far out to complete the comeback for UND.

He's a small skilled offensive defenseman who isn't the best in his own zone. Should have been drafted though. Might top out as a guy too good for the A, but not good enough offensively make it in the NHL. AAAA type

Another goal from Boisvert last night. Better and better each weekend. You can see why Davidson and scouts liked him so much and took him ahead of Hage (who I still liked and like more, but time will tell).
