He has a $8.25M cap hit and $7.5M salary next season - no way Arizona takes on that contract without being 1000% convinced his career is over.
i have arguments against that:

1. they have plenty of cap space, don't they need to hit the floor?
2. assuming he comes back and can play, they easily could see how he is, retain salary, and flip him to a competitor. what gostisbehere said was kind of right - it's a location you can play with no pressure and still show you're a player

1. Injuries are part of the game. They are not some special case where teams need to be made whole.

2. What’s the difference between Jack Hughes getting injured on Feb. 28th and March 4? How does it makes sense to allow a team to bakfill in the first scenario but not the second?

3. There is no backfilling Jack Hughes. Does Adam Henrique replace Jack Hughes?
2. it doesn't make sense, but LTIR and TDL are two separate entities. the fact there is a TDL would allow teams to backfill accordingly, should there be an injury

3. i'm not saying henrique would adequately fill jack hughes' shoes. but i get the idea of LTIR - a team loses 8MM in cap space. you can't replace the player, but you now have space to trade with a crappy team to potentially acquire someone with that room.

i guess i'm not an anti-capper, but moreso a regulated capper

Hall missed the last two games, I don't know why everyone's convinced this is a fake injury.
There’s convinced Hossa’s allergy is imaginary when that it was severe enough to require serious medication so what do you expect.

I love how everyone here wants other teams to suffer rather than solve their cap issues. No complaints that Bernier has been memory holed.

We’re going to be up against the cap and doing the same things.

Bernier? Never heard of him…

Seems like the only chance to stop them is if enough Eastern teams can wear them down and the WC winner is able to breeze through and be fresh. In a vacuum, I don't see a team in the league I would like the odds of taking a series off them.

That's a great point, most late 1st rounders are probably worth more the day they're drafted than 2 years later.
Boston has been very fortunate with Ulmark’s durability and health in goal. If he gets dinged up, that’s the vulnerability. It hangs by that thread. If they have to go to Swayman in the playoffs at some point, the odds will change quite a bit.

The problem, to me, is that there's no cap once the playoffs start. I'm sure there's a reason they did that, but I have no clue why, and it's completely exploitable.

If the cap remained, this would be a complete non-issue.

The players don’t get paid so there isn’t a cap.

Devils legend Jon Gillies on the move for Voracek's contract + 6th

Wait

So is Gillies coming over to actually play in the NHL for the Jackets for the rest of this year? Since Quick doesn’t wanna show?

Gillies hasn’t played since January 16 and has only played two games since the start of the calendar year. Is he even healthy?

He has an .878% in 15 games for the Tucson Roadrunners this year. Maybe the 21-22 Devils actually made him look better than he is and not worse?

If this is a move to actually play him in the NHL at all……….

I'd rather finish 32nd in the league and get relegated to the AHL then have this happen.
I was going to say 'hyperbole' but then I saw your username

It is now. Arizona might break the worst season record in the NHL all time next year unless Bettman rigs the draft for them to get Bedard. Why would he want to come back to that?
He'd come back if he wants to continue his career, he's only 33.

Nhl should definitely have relegation, though, but change nothing else.

I want to see teams desperately try to finish second to last to maximize draft position without getting banished to the shadow realm

Someone has to play goalie for them, not sure who their warm bodies are.

They aren’t going to spend more for a better goalie at this point.

This is the equivalent of us trading a AHL player for Hammond, who was out with ankle injury after having 3 starts/ 4 GP (his first since 2017-18).

I'd be annoyed losing to NYR and disappointed losing to Carolina, but losing to Boston would honestly feel like an honor at this point. We may not see as dominant a team as this again for a while. Just incredible considering they were picked to regress this year.

I think whit players like this, you just have to get them signed and figure the rest out in other areas of the roster. Same as we will have to do with Jack in 7 years.

It's no different than the cap gymnastics NFL teams do and nobody complains about that. It is what it is.

He probably wouldn't be going on LTIR for it, though. At least with things like Mark Stone's back injury you really don't know when he will be healthy. Maybe that's the case with Hall, but probably not.

The only way you could really put a stop to this is to say that anyone that ends the regular season on LTIR is not eligible for the playoffs, but that creates other problems.

Or they could have a cap for the playoff roster. They do in the offseason. Presumably a team could stash several players on LTIR just to have them show up in the playoffs. Unless I'm mistaken.

Pretty much every hockey player in their late 30s has chronic injuries, and if they want to take off hockey and get paid a cool million dollars a year for 3 years it might make sense to given those injuries. Hossa's issue was eyebrow raising and the timing was perfect given his contract structure so he'll get mentioned again and again on this front. Our man Lou is the most suspicious here given the Robidas/Lupul situations, Lupul in particular almost spilling the beans on social media until I guess his agent shut him up.

The NHLPA and GMs both like this get out of jail card, but I get why fans are annoyed by it, especially if they are looking at a rival and salivating over their contracts blowing up and ruining their competitiveness.

Yup

Hammond last year was definitely the first to come to mind

Don't they have Tarasov? Maybe he's injured?

Jon Gillies was a ROCK STAR in my stoppable goals percentages last year. It just wouldn't feel right having no data for him this year, so I'm excited for him to play.

We finished 3rd to last in 2018-19, with one point more than LA’s 71.

So we would have gotten close to the relegation playoffs ourselves then.

Instead we got Jack Hughes.

But yeah, it’s terrible when teams do this, boo hiss.
