Transfer: 2023 Summer Transfer Window - Open Window Edition

I’m looking through Simon Johnson’s pieces here. I’ve read every one of these articles, but just going off titles: (this excludes chelsea sign x, player injured for y)

“Chelsea lack firepower”
- yes

“Why Chelsea believe their spending is within FFP”
- that’s what he was briefed and again, their internal books makes me assume they know where they stand. they self reported the abramovich era inconsistencies with a $100MM allocated budget to pay fines for previous mistakes so i don’t think they’re looking to hide things lol

“Poch wins doubters over” (after liverpool match)
- meh

“Chelsea fail to agree new sponsorship agreement”
- yep

“Why Chelsea owners chose RC Strasbourg”

“Right time to part with NG”
- yep

“Do Chelsea owners deserve credit for shifting dead wood”
- yep

“Chelsea’s 2030 academy project”

“Colwill set for Pochettino talks”

“Mason Mount - how the perfect marriage fizzled out in divorce”
- yep, should have never gotten to that point

“Reece James - captain in waiting”

“Chelsea cannot afford another Mount situation with Colwill”
- yep but he was overhyped and is inferior to bb

“Chelsea womens supporters raise concerns over ticket prices”

“Poch makes immediate impression during preseason”

“Do Chelsea finally have decent strikers?”

“Poch urges clear out”

Like uh, i don’t see some sort of insane bias. Obviously they’re getting club briefings like with the RJ captaincy nod and the FFP stuff, but this is a pretty whatever set of articles

Anyways, came to say that this is a great window. I questioned Tonali but he has looked great. Hall and Barnes I’m big fans of. Livramento they paid a premium on but when fit he’s looked good.

Newcastle has been announcing the Hall move like it's a first team signing as well. Way more coverage than youth buys get, so they clearly rate him.

Press conference with him, photo op and meeting with Eddie Howe, video shoot of he and his parents (big Newcastle fans) touring the stadium, etc.

I would look around this time last year and especially in the early part of last season and during the Potter tenure

Three most stupid things this summer:

Signing French Chalobah, buying Robert Sanchez for 25 million, and selling Hall.

Rest of it (in terms of who has left, who has come in has) has made some sense. I understand the quantity of moves and prices paid for some bother people, but meh.

First team squad arrivals this summer:

Forwards:
Nkunku, Jackson

MF:
Lavia, Andrey, Caicedo

DEF:
Colwill, Gusto, Disasi (why)

GK: Petrovic, Sanchez (why)

Like yeah, there’s two stupid signings but the rest are profiles we needed in a position we were light in.

And, again, it’s going to be “another signing” but they needed another attacking player prior to the injuries of Nkunku and Chukwuemeka.

I blame Argentinos Juniors. Thanks Redondo.

Rumor is they may be willing to wait until January but they definitely like the player. But also why would Fluminense settle for 10m less than their valuation when they know LFC has an extra 90-100m laying around. LFC either don’t understand how leverage works anymore, or they aren’t serious
More than twice their record sale (18M). That is massive money for a Brazilian club.

Was it you or someone else after the Caicedo (or Lavia, can’t remember) signing set the over/under at 6.5 for additional moves? Any way you slice it, £1B in three windows is preposterous.

And we’re still talking about them sneaking in at 5th, it’s crazy.

I set the o/u before the Caicedo and Lavia signings.

Starting DM (Caicedo), backup DM (Lavia), backup gk (Now Petrovic), one of Washington/Wahi for Strasbourg (now Washington), and another attacker.. (Brennan Johnston yuck) seemed like a guaranteed group of players.

The o/u at 6.5 was more of a o/u 1.5 on out of the blue extras - likely more 17 year olds. Like they’ve made a ton of signings for the academy in the past year.

And yes, no question the spending was insane no matter what. But I think there’s some context to it that people like to skip - like the percentage of it that were U20 signings, and the sheer volume of players we have lost in the last 14 months. And that most people would agree that we have shifted on the right group of players.

Christensen, Rudiger, Azpi on frees. Alonso. Latter two were benefits to get rid of but we got shafted out of 100 mill of fees and two squad CBs.

Mendy wanted Kepa’s 200k wage. He had stunk for a year. Like that’s a good player to sell given his age. Loaning Kepa was a bad move, and even if they needed to do it to be FFP compliant, they could have just… not signed Disasi!

Barkley on a free. Jorginho was a good sale. Not giving Kante 300k+ on a 3 year deal at his age etc. Kovacic just wanted to go and it sucked that he left. I didn’t agree with the RLC sale, personally. Mount was awfully handled but the entire board outside of me blender bleedblue & wbs thinks we rinsed united.

Havertz, Lukaku, auba, ziyech, Werner, etc..

I think in my more more ideal world, we keep Werner, Mount, Kovacic, RLC, Rudiger, Christensen, don’t loan Kepa, don’t sell Hall etc and the process is more gradual.

Mistakes were made, but I think a majority of the outgoings have made sense. And a lot of situations were player forced.

I think we are just going to pay the release clause in January and pray we are (?) his top choice
I am surprised on many fronts.
1. Why has Fluminense not accepted the 30M, this is game changer for them. I assume they believe that André is their best player and they cannot move him before they are out of the copa libertadores.
2. Why LFC don't target more south american players. There are some crazy bargains and they could assemble quite a team for so little money.
3. I love André a lot but 40M is a lot, it's entering Vinicius Jr., Endrick, Neymar territory. That are the top brazilian wonderkid value from recent memory.
4. The only competitors are from EPL and real madrid at this point. Maybe Saudi, all other league are broke.

I know LFC are limited by NHG spot but Argentinian have been crazy value too. Just last year, Julian Alvarez, Enzo Fernandez.

Flum hasn’t accepted because it’s worth more to them to win Copa. I don’t blame them.

Been wanting to hit SA for a while. This years class is not as good as last years class though.

I’m okay waiting until January. Player is going to need a rest too so wouldn’t want tot throw him right in anyway. They just have to do the deal in January. Would prefer to just get a defender and call it a day. Need to find another non-HG spot though. Only have one left

Are Chelsea stuck paying Lukaku's salary until January at least, or is there a realistic chance that he could still move somewhere? Serie A has already started and there doesn't seem to be a place/need for him at Juve/Inter.

And apparently Middle East spots have been taken too.

I don’t think he will want to sit out for that long.

The fee they’re asking isn’t really absurd in a vacuum. West Ham and Tottenham make sense to me, for ex.

And yeah, when I looked at the middle east rosters, all the spots were taken except on Gerrard’s team

But they want Greenwood so
