I saw my brother at 18 who was a JR open up my fathers credit card thinking it was for him (debatable) and go on a SD Padres crazy spending spree

The Mets at least make some sense

The Padres are operating like it will be someone else problem in 6 years

Where is San Diego's money coming from
Preller certainly GM’s like he’s on coke, perhaps that’s a side business ;)

I gotta respect it. That owner wants to win before he’s dead. He ain’t even that old but I guess nothing is promised!

They’re dead in the water in a few years so they gotta win it now

Most young fans on the east coast will never see the end of a week day playoff game. How is that supposed to sustain a sport?

And not reminisce about the old days because this is a new problem. It was much easier to be a baseball fan as a young kid in the past. Less day games and long night games have hurt it a lot.

To me this I like the rule changes that were made after the devils made the NHL boring. Line change after icing, trapezoid, pick over glass. All used as strategy that made the game less enjoyable.

Terrible fan recruitment? The game was losing ratings and slowly dying so they made a change.

Not a change that's going to bring those people in as fans though.

People don't like the game itself. The game is "low action" regardless of how much time there is between pitches. They don't have the attention span for it. Likewise basketball and football are popular because something happens every 30 seconds whether it's points scored or a physical collision.

Case in point. The average MLB game is shorter than the average NFL game. The average MLB game is 3 hours 5 minutes, the average NFL game is 3 hours 12 minutes. On top of that the average NFL game only has 12 minutes of actual play

Yes but NFL games happen during the day.

In the playoffs you really need to make a decision about what you are doing the next day and if you stay up or not. When I was working in Boston I was getting up at 5am. Was baseball with 5 to 6 hours of sleep? Most fans are going to say no.

Also a good point. 2 positions ago at work I had to get up at 5am and I could just barely manage a typical Bruins game that ended around 9:30pm. Sox games and baseball in general just aren't like that.

If an MLB season was only 17 games I wouldn't give a f*** if they all last 5 hours.

162 of them? Let's go, pick up the pace.

IMO it's mostly commercial breaks making games last so damn long. Pitchers worked faster in the 70s, but before TV they'd make the third out, run off the field, other team takes positions, a couple warmup throws, and there's 60 or 90 seconds at most between the last pitch of one inning and the first of the next. Now, you make the third out, there's 5 or 6 Liberty Mutual and Geico commercials, come back to some segment with Guerin Austin talking about stuff from field level, then the inning finally starts and it might be a good 5 minutes since the last pitch.

Not saying the more deliberate style of pitching isn't contributing, but it's MLB taking a problem they created and trying to blame the players for it again.
