ESPN did their 2nd Mock Draft today and they have the Red Sox taking 2B Matt Shaw:

14. Boston Red Sox

Matt Shaw, 2B, Maryland

I think the Red Sox are looking for a college bat here to follow with some overslot prep position players at later picks -- their basic blueprint in the past few drafts. Wth Shaw, Tommy Troy, Wilson and Schanuel all still on the board, they get their pick of this demographic.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In their 1st Mock Draft they had Shaw going to Miami at #10.

I’d go Troy but I’d be happy with Shaw.

I've read so much about Tommy Troy over the past several months as if he was a sleeper pick that I now fully expect him to go as late as in the teens. Shaw seems like another potential riser.
But after reading even more about the draft and mocks, I am still sticking with my top 3:

1. Nimmala (basically never really connected to the Sox and I have often seen him being mocked to the Cubs, so I don't think he'll be there at 14)
2. Houck (multiple times connected to the Sox)
3. Miller (connected to the Sox)

No matter what, I don't want a college pitcher (i.e. Dollander / Waldrep).

If Kiley says it, there's probably some truth to it, but I just don't understand the strategy behind it to go underslot with the 1st pick to take the prep positional players in the later rounds overslot when it's been reported that the 1st round is so deep on HS high upside bats and you have Houck and Miller (and potentially Nimmala) sitting there.

The Red Sox' draft blueprint is to go underslot college bat first?

Since when?

That said, I think Shaw is a reasonable pick. He's a Worcester kid, so he might be willing to cut the Sox a pretty good deal.

Hell baby
Yeah they usually go underslot prep on a teenager they really like that the industry consensus has as a bit of a reach and then they take their savings on that pick slot and use it to nab a couple other prep players who are tough to sign away from their college commitments to major programs

Houck is probably the name that would best fit that. Could probably get him a little underslot. Not as much savings. I know they’ve been linked to Tai Peete so he would qualify as a big upside guy they could save a lot on in that slot. Eric Bitonti is a Cali prep SS/3B ranked 53rd so he really fits the profile of what they like

Went underslot with Yorke and nabbed Blaze Jordan, IIRC.

Yah but Tom Werner saved money when he told Nate Eovoldi the offer was off the table and didn’t return Michael Wacha agent phone calls

Imagine charging those prices and putting out the homophobic guy who’s name escapes me when Michael Wacha is 18-4 last 2 seasons in over 200 IP and 3.00 ERA
Imagine trying to blame Tom Werner for the Red Sox not signing Michael Wacha. Nobody should ever believe this.

this team plays up and down to the level of their competition
That just means they are what they are. A true mediocre club that looks destined to be a .500 team. And that should be the end of Chaim Bloom.

The Red Sox are only 3 games out of the 3rd WC spot or however many spots there are now. Duckboats. Extend Chaim.

You seem like a Sports Talk Radio type of guy. Did you hear J-Stew say that he’s heard a Chaim extension is coming down the pike?

How delicious would it be if that moron was finally right for once?

I don't need sports talk hosts to form an opinion on the completely mediocre results produced by Chaim Bloom. If he were to get an extension today that just proves John Henry is completely out to lunch and more concerned with his Top Golf league.

I’m hoping for a Bloom extension. He’s clearly building a winner from the ground up. The system is deep and just getting deeper. Thanks Chaim! Nice to have someone who values the importance of a farm system.

2020 = you poor babies had to suffer through a shortened season and the reward was Marcelo Mayer.

2020-2021 = Playoff run to the ALCS

2022-2023 = Currently in the hunt for a playoff spot.

BUT BLOOOOOM SUCKS. HAHAHAHAHAHAH

It’s so comical.

Comical is you leaving out the last place finish last year.

This teams expectation was either winning the division and or first in the WC to make a deep playoff run every season. Now it is Loyd Christmas, "So you're telling me there's a chance"
