he had a bad April and paints his nails tho! BOOOO PERSONALITY BOOOOOOO

Wasn’t even just his offense, he may have saved a run with that diving stretch. THAT is what I was expecting from him defensively this year, not what we’ve gotten to this point

In other news Mayer and Yorke are lasering balls to the moon in AA

Yorke is getting to AAA by August. I sense it.

Sweet but no clue 1hat the xbwobewtx stands for
Says it right there in the tweet- it weighs how much a hitter strikes out, walks, and how hard they hit the ball and mashes it all together. It’s a predictive stat- you’ll have a better idea of how a player will do in the long run as opposed to things like simple batting average, which can be impacted in a big way by luck and doesn’t really factor in a players approach much (give me a .240 hitter who walks and slugs over an empty .300 who doesn’t walk)

Fair enough. Case of me reading the acronym and instantly giving up and not reading the rest.

I don’t blame you, my eyes will glaze over seeing some of them. They get way too in the weeds and overdo it sometimes. This is one that does have value in regards to evaluating a player. I’m not going any deeper than it though lol
Whats weedier? I'm sure something along the lines of 'the last 10 games he's been batting ABOVE his EXPected blah blah blah'

DOB = the Listening equivalent of, “watching grass grow”.

He is A-S-S, ass. We’re beyond due for a change up. Give us Monaco! Merloni continues to be good.

Fun game last night. I just love watching Coke take L’s. He just looks so miserable out there. Daddy Devers gave him another spanking.

Whitlock pitched great. Casas coming around. BA up to .209 now. Good to see.

Hernandez was really good in the field and the HR was big.

Get another one tonight.

I watched a good chunk of the game instead of tracking it online. I enjoy Merloni's analysis. It flows well and is sensible. He and OB even seem to have a little chemistry, which is a first for OB and anyone that I can remember.

Whitlock looked very good. He has lost a little velocity off his fastball, but his breaking stuff was excellent. His effective use of the breaking ball should bode well long term. We will see what happens when the hitters adjust to it.

The whole point of this post was to say he HASNT hit poorly for about a month and a half and still gets roasted by Sox fans.

He had a mini slump for a handful of games a week or two ago (entire lineup slumped) but outside of that? Roses since the calendar turned May. Without looking he probably been their 3rd best hitter behind Yoshida and Refsnyder since then.

Defense is a consideration and I thought about mentioning it, but even if they're inflating the ERA, they all still have bad FIPs. The rotation guys all seem to have a FIP-ERA difference of approximately 0.50 (except Bello, who somehow has a negative spread and is benefitting), so the defense is costing them about a half a run a night, however for most of them it's the difference between 5.20 and 5.70, they're still bad pitchers regardless so it's an overstated factor. Houck has had it worse than the rest of them, probably because he has the ball in play more often. If we had stellar defense he might be closer to an average starter this year. But still an over-4 FIP.

Something I'd like to know and I don't know if there's anyone keeping data on this is how they've all been affected by the shift ban. Are particular pitchers being victimized more than others by hits that would've been snuffed out by the shift in previous years? Likewise are certain hitters profiting from it?
Yes and no. I agree with your point that the defense is costing them about a half run per game, however it also contributes to pitch count, and subsequently workload. Every error is gonna add on average 4-8 pitches per outing and it’s gonna affect your starter’s ability to go deeper into a game and puts more workload on your bullpen.

There‘s also a psychological impact that bad defense has on a pitcher. That’s harder to quantify, but it definitely exists.

.330/.390/.720 is terrible for the season so far. He is worse than a replacement player overall so far.
