Hell baby
If he can't beat out Sam Darnold or Brock Purdy, what is he?
An FCS guy coming back from a severe ankle break. He was going to need a lot of development to begin with due to not facing a high level of competition in college and the ankle set him back further. I’d absolutely bring him in as a low cost- long term developmental project

Kyle Shanahan is sorta the QB whisperer as it is. Sure, take a flyer on Lance. But losing out to Sam Darnold? Woof. I think he's cooked.

Would you guys trade Mac Jones for Trey Lance?

Considering the Patriots want to win games this season they really can't. Lance's development was always going to have a big curve because he played so little in college, then the injury decimated his progress. He needs to go to a team that doesn't care about winning this year so he can take his lumps. (It's why I'm not surprised what's happened in San Fran, where they want to win the Super Bowl this year and have the team to do it potentially.)

I would absolutely give up a first round pick for him in a vacuum, though. A team like Tampa or Washington would be insane not to. My fear is Pittsburgh will take him on. He has incredible skills and just needs the space to grow.

I am by no means sold on Mac Jones as the answer but absolutely not. The only way you make that trade is if you think Bailey Zappe can deliver the exact same results as Mac Jones this year.

Hmmm I don't see this. I don't think any team is giving up a first round pick for him after he just lost out to Sam Darnold and considering Kyle Shanahan does better with QBs than just about any coach in the league.

I'd be scared to bring in Lance at this point. Especially because of the ankle break. If his mobility is limited or he's mentally shook to leave the pocket as a result...there's no reason to take a look right now. Let him prove it in the XFL or USFL first before signing him, especially when Malik Cunningham is turning heads and there's some options available in the upcoming draft.

I don't know if anyone will. In fact, they almost certainly won't, especially if Lance demands a trade. I am just saying I would. To me the ceiling makes it worth it the risk.

(Again, I'm not putting much stock into "can't beat out Sam Darnold" because of all the reasons I gave. He's not ready, he's coming off a major injury, and they're in win this year mode. Darnold makes sense as the backup considering Purdy is also coming off an injury. Lance might end up being a total bust, but I think a smart team will see why he's worth the risk, even if they don't have to give up much to get him.)

Wow does Trey Lance have to suck. One of the worst trades in NFL history.
Weird - they may have made one of the worst pick ever factoring in the trade to get there - and with some luck the best last pick (sorry Don Nottingham)

The 49ers' original draft slot that year wound up being Micah Parsons. It is going to go down as one of the worst trades in history.

Not only that, but if you look at the draft picks/trades as a result of that initial deal, it's wild.

Houston ends up with Tunsil
Dolphins end up with Waddle, Tyreek Jill, and Bradley Chubb
Philly ends up with Devonta Smith
Dallas ends up with Parsons.
