NHL Entry Draft 2023 NHL Draft Thread

My interest in this coming entry draft is just about nil. It is Doubtful that we will acquire a quality prospect from this draft.

We have very few quality prospects (Greig, Kleven and perhaps Bernard-Docker) and do not have our first round pick in 2023.

Have you forgotten Ostapchuk, I expect him to be a player & there may be a few others that could surprise us.

Yes I did forget about him. Also forgot to include Thomson who I like too. It was one of those too frequent "senior moments" in my life. :)

I think a reasonable assumption can be made that a kid who’s father is 5’8” isn’t going to be over 6’ tall, the size you’d want to see in a defender at the NHL level. Doesn’t take a genius to understand this simple concept about genetics.
Reasonable assumption, yes. Known with certainty, no.

Outside of Greig I like Ostapchuk the most of all our prospects. I think he's pretty close to a guaranteed NHLer.

But our prospect pool is very thin at the moment. Luckily we have a nice young core. Keeping the window of competition open (once we get there) is going to be a real challenge given our depleted pool of prospects and picks.

You're right, but our team's best players are all young & most of them, the good ones anyway, have graduated specifically in the top 6 & we have a top 4 on defence. I think the team can go a couple yrs without being overly concerned with not have a good prospect pool, but should start adding to it again in future.

With some of the other guys coming they can begin to fill out the bottom six & 3rd pairing. Dorion's most important job this summer is going to be to replace Talbot in net with a reliable consistent decent NHL #1 goaltender. Who knows what Forsberg will be like after blowing out both knees & how long it will take him to get back to where he was, if he can. This team looks poised IMO to make the playoffs next season if they can get good consistent goaltending.

At least we have picks in 2024. Also one player I'd love to draft in the later rounds is Felix Unger Sorum. He has to the potential to be a Backlund that can play all 3 forward positions.

Just reading the NHL draft preview from the hockey news.
In the team reports section on Ottawa, under long term needs, written by Jared Clinton he says, lol, ( long time subscriber but not familiar with him.)

The Senators need to find a first line centre.
For all his upside Batherson hasn’t convinced he can be the pivot the Senators need to be a contender. Perhaps they look outside the organization.

Like did he just look at capfriendly and see Jimmy listed as a LW and didn’t notice Norris on LTIR?

That’s - awesome.

It’s sad reporting, capfriendly actually has him as a centre, NHL has him listed as LW, no idea why NHL never updates.

Heard a few teams really like Cam Squires at the combine
Good sized kid, that has been able to show off a good scoring touch in the Q and is quite proficient around the net, some work to be done in his overall game - in that I mean he doesn‘t have a physical side, has steered away from contact and his two-way game is a work in progress, but year over year he has gotten noticably better. I’d have him around the range of the first Sens selection too, but is probably rather undervalued in the grand scheme of thingz.

For those unaware and interested - I published my final draft rankings around a month back. I know we won’t have a selection till past the top-100 I listed but there is a chance we recoup a selection in this range at some point, so I thought I’d share here nonetheless.

I think Anton Wahlberg will be a target if we get a mid-late 1st back in a DeBrincat deal.

6'3, good skater, late riser, plays hard, drives the net and has more PIMs than GP.

Checks off way too many boxes for what Mann's scouting staff looks for.

Michov might be second best player but won’t go second. Carlson a bit too low.

We might get a late 1st. I'd love to get Gabe Perreault

I like Carlsson, just don’t feel the upside is as Good as the guys I ranked ahead. Reinbacher I think has #1 D upside which I think is more valuable than a #1A/1B i project Carlsson to he. Michkov could be a franchise winger, and Smith i think has #1 C upside.

Not saying I think Carlsson is bad, I just like the upside of the others above him.

Don't count on it. This is the Sens scouting staff we're talking about.

Look for gritty toolsy players with high PIMs. Bonus if they are late-risers.

Wahlberg, Nelson, Lind, Bertucci, Burns and Price are guys I expect they'd be interested in in the late 1st.

Considering Brannstrom can out play Chabot many nights at 1/4th of the cap but only worth a mid 2nd, does that mean Chabot has negative value at 8m?

None of this is even remotely true

Last 3 seasons Chabot got injured, all three seasons Brannstrom filled in those minutes and the team somehow looked better and at worse the same quality.

Either Chabot is overrated or Brannstrom is underrated.
