Immediately after the 2020 draft, we arguably had the best future outlook in the entire league. Since then it’s been a lot of wasted assets and plenty of other teams have blown by us thanks to sneaky good management.

I love this team and it pains me to say it but I’m honesty not that high on this rebuild anymore. Obviously we’ll be in the playoffs soon but I’m not sure we ever hit cup contender status.

Devils were considered behind us in their rebuild and then *poof* they’re a consensus top 5 team.

Senators honestly have a good young core but it honestly pisses me off what they’ve done with the draft when I compare with Buffalo. Giving away picks or wasting top 10s on freaking Tyler Boucher

I dislike our bottom 6 a lot, then we are losing Cat and Giroux isnt gonna play for ever. They better wake up

Management still has work to do…
I'll give Dorion credit for the drafting Brady, Sanderson and Batherson(Stutzle was a no brainer), and the Chychrun trade was good, but he's butchered virtually every other aspect of the rebuild.

-letting Duclair walk for nothing
-got next to nothing for trading Duchene and Stone
-traded two 2nds from the Dzingel trade for Stepan and Matt Murray
-traded Gustavsson away for a senior citizen
-didn't pick up guys like Vrana or Tolvanen when they could have been had for free

And before anyone says it, no, Melnyk is not to blame, many of those moves had nothing to do with Melnyk's cheapness.

Him drafting Formenton and Pinto are also good.

I suspect that Habs fans heads must have exploded between the brief period where the 4th pick took place, Michkov is available, and Price goes up there and forgets what the hell is going on, and ends up selecting Reinbacher.

3 years is nothing.

Was Kaprisov not ample evidence that bringing a guy in at 23 is no sacrifice?

Worth the wait.
Especially considering MTL isnt doing anything anytime soon. I live in Montreal and watch them a lot. My friends chirp me a lot with the 6 years without playoffs I made a 100$ bet they wouldnt make them either for 5 years minimum, 2/5 sor far. I think Reinbacher will be good but with the talent that was available I laughed a bit. Especially considering how annoying Habs twitter (and my friends) are. Sadly Sens twitter is as insecure and cringe as them

Every time they tank they get a reach or someone that’s not game breaking.

This board would be doing the same if we passed on Michkov for someone else

Heck our board blew up when we took Boucher over Sillinger and everyone else in round 1

Probably. But I don't think the difference is that extreme. Michkov is going to be insane, but that 3 year wait (and who knows what else happens til then) is a big concern. That Reinbacher kid looks like he's definitely on track to be at least a second pairing guy, with good potential to be the big, physical defensive conscience on a first pairing for a decade. And being RD, that's money to lock up a piece like that.

If I was picking 5th, I'd be happy with either one.

I don't think that's a fair comparison at all.

Reinbacher was ranked 8th by McKenzie, while Michkov was 5th but has some real flags.

Boucher was at best ranked in the late first. and by some as a 2nd or even 3rd rounder.

The Habs got a very well regarded prospect, just not the one they wanted. This is closer to Tkachuk over Zadina than being anything even remotely relatable to Boucher over any other option. The thing is, once you get past the top 3 or so, nobody is a sure thing anymore. Guys like Zadina, Turcotte, Glass, Puljujarvi, ect were all seen as great cornerstone pieces for their teams until they weren't. We'll have to wait and see,

Habs board is definitely an interesting read right now. 53 pages on that 5th overall pick...and still going.
I mean I am very relieved they didn't get Dubois or pick Michkov personally. I'd be upset too. Same if I was a Coyotes fan... Yikes.

Leafs go tiny again... Yikes. Especially with David Edstrom the big Swedish Center just sitting there. It is Dubas's scouting staff so I'm not surprised but wow not what that prospect pool or organization needed.

I'd be extatic as a Philly, Chicago, Colorado and St Louis fan. Buffalo and Winnipeg continue to draft well.

They’re going to regret saying all these things judt like we did with Tkachuk.

David Reinbacher is going to be a #1 D in the NHL, and this Clip will circulate whenever he does anything positive for the Habs.
I can't believe they wanted Shane Wright he's brutal. Watched him a bunch in his draft year surprised he didn't slip further than 4th. I don't think this is similar to last year Slafkovsky was the right choice.

Reinbacher is going to be a solid d man. But man they missed on a true offensive stud. They don't have one.... they don't. The timeline on Michkov is also perfect for them. They had 9 picks gotta swing for the fences once in a while.

- Arz took a bit of a reach twice & ended up with two huge Russian teammates.
- Montreal selects a decent RD, but they are a small team & should be a lottery team again next yr & for a few yrs to come
- Toronto reaches into the 4th rd for a 1st rd pick
- drafts are always a bit if a crap shoot & wait & see, could get some winners in the 2-7 rds too
- no trades in the 1st rd

I don't mind the Reinbacher pick. He is close to NHL ready. Good size , mobility .. Good 2 way. Top pairing potential.
Building up the D corps isn't a bad approach. Reinbacher, Guhle, Mailloux, Barron .. thats a good start.
They have Lane Hudson who could be a PP QB type.

Picking 5 this year you were going to leave very talented options on the board. I thought they'd go with Leonard but I was not shocked.

Agree pretty much all around.

Buffalo has been getting a lot of praise but IMO there is a reason guys like Benson and Savoie fall. They have real high upside but small scorers like that definitely scare me when using a top 15 pick. Hard to say how well their games will translate.

Yeah...having 1 or 2 little guys (especially at forward) won't sink a team. But you do need to surround the little guys with good size, skill, and the willingness to be physical.

Thompson, Cozens and Tuch all locked up will help on that front.

I’m not a huge fan of Savoie, or Benson to be fair. But they’re pretty great guys to have in the wings coming up to support Thompson, Cozens, Peterka and Quinn up front.

They did take Quinn over Rossi. The bigger player playing on the same team. Quinn, like Benson takes the puck to the net and has shown signs of a scoring ability that would translate to the nhl.

big goalie too big.

No kidding. Still remember the days of the goalies being like Grant Fuhr sized, and a tall goalie would be Barrasso or Hextall. Makes you wonder about what condition those knees will be in once he hit's his 30s with that height.

Nope Detroit picks 41

Stalled at 42. Let’s go
Things happening
